I am a member of the American Legion, Post #27, Apache Junction, Arizona. I joined the A.L. because back in Wisconsin my father was a Charter Member of our small post in Blue River.
These are the eligibility dates that you would have needed to be "active duty" in order to join the American Legion. I got these right off the back of my membership card...
WWI: April 6, 1917 - November 11, 1918
WWII: December 7, 1941 - December 31, 1946
Korean War: June 25, 1950 - January 31, 1955
Vietnam War: February 28, 1961 - May 7, 1975
Lebanon/Grenada: August 24, 1982 - January 31, 1984
Panama: December 20, 1989 - January 31, 1990
Persian Gulf: August 2, 1990 - cessation hostilities as determined by U.S. Govt.
I don't know about the VFW. I'm sure their web site would have their eligibility requirements.
