"No society can legitimately call itself civilised if a sick person is denied medical aid because of lack of means." - Nye Bevan

The UK was not civilised until we created the NHS, It saved a nation from destitution.

So ALL of our 243 years were uncivilized? You better re-think that.

To be fair ... most of England's "civilizing" was done by the Martini Henry

If thst is true, then I want nothing to do with “civilized” society, now or ever.

We had the biggest empire the world had ever seen but the majority of people lived and died in squalor. Houses, jobs, health care, workers rights and sanitation dragged Britain to a better place. All in the teeth of Conservative opposition
Churchill won the war and was booted out. The people wanted something better and they got it.

Good for you, but that is not our deal here.

It is interesting whether Western Europe and Britain in particular will be able to preserve free medical treatment in the future considering current demography and economy.

It is always under threat. But we spend relatively little on the NHS compared to what they spend in the US for example..You tend to find that those who moan about the costs are tory politicians with shares in private health companies. IE -most of them.

The big threat at the moment is brexit and having it opened up to US vulture companies.

I have always thought that state spendings on health care and other social programs in the US are lower than that of European countries (in comparison with GDP). So average taxation rate is also lower.

Reality Check: Does UK spend half as much on health as US?

This is an interesting report. You can see that the UK government is spending less than the US government and yet everyone is covered. So there is plenty of room to raise spending.

The NHS is a disaster in terms of patient care:

"It is unacceptable that less than half of NHS trusts and foundation trusts (trusts) meet the 18-week waiting times standard for elective treatment, and only 38% meet the 62-day standard from referral to treatment for cancer patients."

"Like many areas within the NHS, demand for elective and cancer treatments is growing which risks exacerbating this worsening performance. The waiting list for elective care has grown by one and a half million since March 2013 to 4.2 million in November 2018."

As always happens unrestricted capitalism sucks the life out of humanity.

How are the things going in medical care now? Is there shortage of doctors, nurses, ewuimpent in hospitals?

Its falling apart. All the foreign staff are leaving because of brexit and a decade of tory cuts is bringing it to its knees. But it is still fixable.

It seems that isn't a Tory fault. They have to consider the demographic and economy shift to make ends meet.
How many of the staff are of foreign origin? And where are they from mostly?
