Gas over 4 bucks a gallon again

This gas price problem can be fixed very easily. Ask the oil companies to stop trying to maximize their profits. Tell them the following:

1- People in the US are basically forced to consume energy through cars, air conditioning, cooking
2- Because of that, we really dont have much choice but paying for it
3- Thus, raising their prices is just like raising taxes
4- They are a business, not a government
5- They should treat the citizens the way we want our government to treat citizens and STOP RAISING TAXES (in this case, their prices)

Will the private sector gas companies abide by our requests and run their business like a government by not raising taxes (prices)?

How old are you?

That's exactly what Jimmy Carter did, toll the companies to stop maximizing their profits and instituted price controls. That's how we ended up with strict rationing. Most gas stations had no gas at all.

Oh.....

So the correct way to run a business is to in fact maximize profits, even through price spikes? Hmmmmmm.

So, to run a government "like a business" that government should:

A) Raise it's prices (taxes) in spikes if necessary to maximize profits
B) Spend as little of that revenue as possible to increase internal profits

So the governments across America should spike taxes, then reduce it's spending on services as much as possible to maximize it's internal profits???? The right says govt should run like a business. Isn't that the natural result then?

Actually most business don't maximize prices when costs spike. The first thing they do is try to absorb as much of the spike as they can to weather the spike and keep their clientele. It depends on how high the spike is and how long it's expected to last. When you get a company as large as an oil company they really can't absorb too much of a spike or for too long. They have shareholders (owners) to satisfy. Absorbing too much for too long would result in a sell off with the whole company losing value. No company is in business to lose money. It must make a profit or simply die.

So a government suffering a prolonged drop in revenue (say, 2008-present) would be justified in raising prices (taxes) to survive? If they ran like a business?

I don't think you understand basic business principles at all. If a business raises prices too high, their customers will go someplace else. Like businesses left California when taxes got too high.

And some governments fail at maintaining order when they are broke and cant pay for services. Which means some govts have their prices "too low" to survive, and at times, a price spike is necessary. If it happens in business, surely it must be accepted in govt?

ONLY if they haven't topped out. They must also cut services. If they ran it like a business. Don't confuse taxes with revenue because they aren't the same. A government has to cut taxes to increase revenue. The same way a business has to lower prices to get more customers and increase revenue. A business in financial trouble would never raise prices to get out of it. They would lower prices instead.

Oh.

Then why are gas stations raising prices? Shouldn't they be lowering them instead? And grocery stores, and clothing stores, and all these other staples of society, that are SPKING prices???? If times are so tough....shouldn't they be lowering them?

So, they should either be:

In tough times b/c of Obama, and thus, LOWERING their prices
Or, since prices are going up, they must be having good times

Which is it? Because prices of everything are in fact going up.

They must lower services. They can't stay in "business" offering the same level of service.

Maybe you can understand this.

At one time, gas stations had gas station attendants. They would put gas in your car, check the oil, wash the windows, check the tires. Then came government mandated spikes. The minimum wage was raised, taxes went up, the cost of doing business at that level could not be sustained. Services had to be cut and they were, permanently.

You can still find a gas station that offers full service, gas is just two bucks a gallon more.

And that is with a service being offered! With this government if revenue is too low to survive where is the available revenue going? If it was our little gas station on the corner, the owner would be taking the money and buying wild bird seed with it to throw around for the pigeons.

May be less where some of you are, but it's risen about 60 cents where I am and now going over the four dollar mark for regular unleaded.

God I'm so sick of this lousy ass economy!

Its not the economy, its OPEC. We don't control them, never will. this is why I support alternative energies. Even if a huge reserve of oil was discovered today, how long will that supply America alone? Probably not long, I suspect we could get maybe a decade of lower prices followed by a HUGE increase once our supplies go down.

True, and I think that is part of the problem. People want to pay less for government, but dont want to lose any of the service. They want a room at the Hilton but only wanna pay Red Roof Inn prices.

And remember as a lib, Obama has zero sympathy for Americans who drive automobiles. Like all libs, he wants the prices of fuel as high as possible so we will all drive less, and get on the bus and ride bicycles.
