George R. R. Martin has missed the deadline that would have allowed the concluding novel in the Game of Thrones series to be published before the final season of GoT airs on HBO. Thus, depending on how long George takes to finish the book, major plot activities could be shown on the screen before Martin's rabid print fans have the opportunity to read about them in print.

But as followers of the two media have seen, the show doesn't exactly follow the print versions, and in fact, in many ways it improves on them.

Without being unkind, Martin has the physical presence of a "heart attack waiting to happen," and his recent tweets and interviews indicate that his creative juices are - shall we say - slowly drying up. Prolific writers like Martin have the ability to string together page after page of pablum while they sort through different story lines in their brains, which is why his novels run to thousands of pages. Game of Thrones has many faults, both in print and on the screen, but I sincerely hope that he finishes this last tome before he goes on to His Reward.

Would that Tyrion Lannister could run for POTUS.
