Every post by the board socialists and other liberals I've read in response to this longrunning trend (people distrusting Big Government), essentially says, "Well, the American people are completely stupid."

It's probably the biggest difference between conservatives and leftist fanatics.

Conservatives believe that, while people are certainly imperfect, they are good enough and smart enough that they will propser the most overall if left to their own devices, taking the hits for their own mistakes and learning where they can.

The leftist fanatics believe that government must take care of them and make more and more decisions for them, because they are just too stupid to ever learn, and will slide downhill if not for the control of government imposed on them.

That's why we get the leftist fanatics' insistence on Big Government from cradle to grave; while conservatives favor keeping government out of their way and confining its activities to making sure OTHER people stay out of their way, interfering only when someone messes with them or otherwise violates their rights.

To me it boils down to this romantic notion that liberals have of the government. It appears that they think of the government as some kind of benevolent manifestation of We The People, We The Collective, and that we all would feel very fortunate that we have leaders who always want to do what's best for us, take care of us, provide for us. This is why they ignore the fact that professional politicians so regularly lie to us, using our money to fund their lies, telling us all along that they have our best interests at heart.

They're like a woman who marries an asshole. "I'll fix him", they think. So they tinker and tinker and forgive his cheating and drinking and violence, even going so far as to blame themselves for it. When he says he'll change, they so much want to believe it. And there's sure as hell no way you can say something negative about him to her. Meanwhile, the guy is getting away with some pretty nasty stuff.

You don't seem to understand the cumulative weight and cost of overzealous regulation.

Tell me if i tied you up and proceeded to make half inch long by half inch deep cuts over your entire body until you expired could you tell me which one cut killed you or would you say it was the cumulative result of all the cuts?

I gave you a link earlier about how much regulation actually costs and that small businesses bear the brunt of that cost.

Tell me do you really think that costs is trivial because the cost of a single regulation might be low?

Yep. And that's why they are high here.

They're low in China because it has a huge supply of labor - 1.3 billion people, and it doesn't have nearly enough business capital to keep them all employed in high paying jobs.
