A few weeks ago, SafeLink had located an outdoor booth directly across the street from the VA hospital in Lake City, Florida. They displayed a sign which advertised free cell phones and free minutes for veterans. I told the person that I was a vet but I made too much money to qualify for a free phone. I was informed that the free service was available regardless of income as long as I was a vet. The only information she asked for was my name, address, phone number and last four digits of my SS number. She said all I had to do was prove I was a vet. I showed her my VA card, she scanned it and said that was all she needed. About a week later I got my free TracFone with my free minutes pre-installed.

I don't know if other states offer this service for vets, but Florida does. Here's a link for you guys and gals:

Since other states may have the same program, here is the number to call to find out: 1-800-Safelink (723-3546)
