It's easy to quit, not so easy to stay off of the dang things. It's the same as being addicted to drugs. I quit with the patches, I used them for about a week. I wasn't around smokers where I worked or at home so it was somewhat easier but still a very tough thing to do.

I applaud anyone who quits and stays off of them, including me. :) Labor Day 2014 will be 11 years.

I smoked two packs a day and tried pills, the patch, hypnosis and cold turkey. I always went back to smoking and rationalized it because I had a high pressure job.. Then a thought came to me. I asked Jesus Christ to take away my desire to smoke and haven't had or wanted to smoke for 17 years. It won't work for those of you who are not a Christian.

I quit in May 2013. I started smoking in July 1964 and smoked all but about 5 years since that time

It was easy to quit this time, though

I was too sick to smoke for at least three weeks.

Hell I was barely conscious much of the time.

Now the hard part is staying off tobacco

A task made much easier since I can smoke pot legally here in Maine.

Whenever that urge to smoke becomes unbearable I smoke a pinner.

Just under 9 mos and counting

Hit em in the pocketbook. Raise the prices of cigarettes drastically so they either will quit, or significantly reduce consumption.

Close to half the cost of a cigarette (or other tobacco product) is tax. Exactly what you propose is already in practice. I'm curious, would you propose the same government action for any other practice deemed unhealthy regardless of its positive qualities?

Benefits of nicotine:
Lower incidence of Alzheimer's disease.
Nicotine boosts the growth of new blood vessels. (Important if you are diabetic)
Reduction in depressive feelings.
Reduced risk of Parkinson's disease.
Lower incidence of ulcerative colitis.
Lower incidence of Tourette's Syndrome.
Lower incidence of rheumatoid arthritis.
Lower incidence of colorectal cancer.
Improvement in learning.
Improvement in attention. (Think ADD)
Improves immediate and longer-term memory.

No, just cigarettes. I want to discourage young ones from taking up the habit.

I cut off my fingers and super glued my lips together and still found a way to smoke. Time to cut off the toes and glue my nostrils together.

Ain't that the truth.

To the OP ... two of your four aren't "natural" but I did find acupuncture combined with Welbutrin (Zyban) very helpful.

The Super Glue - not so much.

Do whatever you have to though. Just quit. Its worth it.

Also helpful to me was to take that amount of money, put it away and then use it for something you want. Don't pay bills or use it for anything necessary. Give it to yourself as a gift and enjoy it.

Having said that, there was a time when I said (lied) that smoking was what I gave to myself.

I believe native Americans were involved with contraband cigarettes. It's harder now since the ATF started enforcing restrictions on mailing or delivery of tobacco products. Cigars are exempt. :D

Native Americans are not selling contraband and its not illegal.

OTOH, when I lived in NYC years ago, someone from the building would make weekend runs to Canada with a list. Monday morning, there would be the ritual in the coffee room of getting your cig order.

Replicate research on spiritual healing curing addiction and disease.
Make it accessible to more of the public, since it is already free.

not only will this reduce cases of addiction and abuse, but will also lead to early
prevention and more cost effective treatment of cancer, diabetes, schizophrenia
and other diseases.

the medication companies may resist at first, but the people who can see in advance where this is heading, will start redirecting their resources to more sustainable sources of business.

making money off addictions is not sustainable, because those can be treated and cured permanently. there is always need for medical surgeries and devices for people who lose limbs or become paralyzed or permanently damaged.

in the mind or spirit. if you address that, you cure mre than just smoking addiction
but other alcohol and drug addiction, relationship abuse, and other physical and social ills.

I am afflicted with the symptoms of arthritis. My physician prescribed a drug that is very effective in controlling the pain and the stiffness. He DIDN'T urge me to take up smoking. ;-)

Contraband or counterfeit cigarettes are indeed illegal outside the reservations. The ATF is responsible for enforcing laws against counterfeit cigarettes:

ATF has used these statutes and charges in tobacco enforcement investigations:
•Title 18, United States Code, Section 2320 – Trafficking in counterfeit cigarettes

Problem is that although contraband cigarettes are legal for sale on native reservations, these cigarettes are also sold through the mail which is not legal.

If you want to quit smoking - do it!

Cold Turkey.

I did it more than 10 years ago and haven't had the slightest desire to pick it up again since.

:eusa_whistle:

Anyone who thinks breaking nicotine addiction occurs easily was never addicted to it.

It's not easy, but it's also not as difficult as many make it to be. The key to quitting permanently is focusing on the benefits from quitting rather than worrying about what you are missing. You really have to want to become a non-smoker. I quit cold turkey after smoking for 30 years. Making it through the first ten days was tough, but then it got much easier. I think the most difficult thing about quitting is to remain smoke free and never go back to smoking again. What helped me was the fact that I started working out when I quit. Now I would never go back to smoking again because it would destroy everything positive I have done since quitting. Three months after I quit, I had lost the 17 pounds of excess weight I wanted to drop. That's right, I lost weight after I quit smoking. I ran a 5K three months after I quit and ran it in just under 27 minutes. Now I can run a 5K in 22 minutes, and I'm shooting for 21 this year. For a 50 year old who smoked for 30 years, that isn't too bad.

Yeah, not to mention the sheer ingrained HABIT of it and the psychological addiction! I would never use the term "easy" in regard to quitting smoking, that's for sure!

He didn't actually say it would be easy, though. But he did imply that increasing your water intake was a good way to "instantly" quit smoking.

To that I say

:poop:

The physical addiction is only half of the battle. Getting the nicotine out of your system takes 72 hours without a cigarette. After that it does get a bit easier, but there is still an issue with physical cravings for ten days to two weeks. The reason for this is that nicotine increases our dopamine levels. Dopamine makes us feel good. As our dopamine levels rise, we feel better. That is why we continue to smoke, and that is how nicotine becomes addictive. It takes about two weeks for dopamine levels to drop to normal and for our body to adjust to that new level. After that point, the physical cravings cease. Then it's all about staying quit and winning the psychological battle. If you quit cold turkey, the toughest time for most people is getting from day ten to day fourteen. After that, it becomes much easier.

Hit em in the pocketbook. Raise the prices of cigarettes drastically so they either will quit, or significantly reduce consumption.

That's been done already. I actually support increasing taxes on cigarettes to make it difficult on those who smoke. It really doesn't do much to get smokers to quit, but what it does do is stop many young people from ever starting. When they see how much it costs, many decide it just isn't worth it.

When I started smoking in 1980, I could buy a pack of cigarettes for $.75. I was still in high school and I was making $4.75 per hour at my job, which was a bit above minimum wage at the time. I think minimum wage at the time was $3.35 per hour. At $3.35 per hour, a high school student could buy four packs of cigarettes with one hour's pay. Compare that to today where in many states you can only purchase one pack with an hour's pay at minimum wage, and you can see that there is a huge difference. Smoking was cheap when I started to smoke but not anymore.

Hit em in the pocketbook. Raise the prices of cigarettes drastically so they either will quit, or significantly reduce consumption.

They already do that in my state, Alaska. A pack of cigarettes costs over $9. Doesn't make people quit, just hurts them financially.

And why single out cigarettes? What about booze. Tax the fuck out of booze while we're at it. I've seen more lives destroyed, families wrecked, health ruined by booze than cigarettes.

By the way, it sounds really uppity to talk about "them," meaning cigarette smokers, like they're some different kind of species. I'm sure you're perfect, right?

I don't smoke, I quit 12 years ago, but when I quit I promised myself I wouldn't become one of those asshole ex-smokers or nonsmokers who thinks they're better than people who smoke.

It's not about thinking you are better; it's about realizing how stupid smoking really is. Besides the fact that it is terrible for your health, it smells horrible. I can barely stand to walk into a smoker's home anymore because the stench just makes me gag. Smokers do not realize how bad the stench is until they actually quit. I'm all about getting as many people to quit as possible. If it takes me berating them to some degree, then so be it.

Here's the deal when it comes to smoking. We're all going to die at some point. Smokers believe that is the only issue when it comes to their health, and many really do not care if they lose ten years off of their life. What they do not understand is that for most, it will affect their quality of life while they are alive. Since I quit, my quality of life has increased many times over. Not only am I healthier, I'm also happier, and I can do so many things now that I could not do in the past.
