For Donald Trump, Now Comes the Hard Part

"Mr. Trump inherits a Republican Party that has been traumatized and torn apart by his campaign. A majority of primary voters in the later contests ultimately chose him, but potentially crippling divisions persist on the right: In Indiana, roughly a quarter of Republican voters said they would be scared to see him elected president, according to exit polls.

The Republican National Committee has already swung behind Mr. Trump, with Reince Priebus, the party chairman, declaring Tuesday night that Mr. Trump was the presumptive nominee. But others in the party — most significantly, a half-dozen senators running for re-election in Democratic and swing states — face a tougher choice.

Republicans opposed to Mr. Trump gravely misunderstood their own party. Many believed that the bulk of primary voters were firmly set against Mr. Trump’s candidacy and saw his early successes as a function of the large, fractious group of candidates running against him. As the Republican field dwindled in size, they expected a majority of the party to rally around a single rival.

There was no anti-Trump majority left to rally, if it ever existed in the first place."

Trump is truly in the big leagues now and must work to unite his party through his words and actions in approaching the Democratic party's nominee. It is more than picking a Veep who will reflect the will of those who oppose Trump, he must rehabilitate how own image and act more presidential.
Should be quite a few months. Will he suddenly turn into a more thoughtful, intellectual, dignified candidate -- which would make all those who reveled in his embarrassing, abrasive behavior look a little silly -- or will he continue to say things that turn off so many in his own party, continuing to increase the number of Hillary Republicans?

The spotlight will be on him even MORE now, we'll see.

Hmmm..getting an early jump on the bread and circuses I see, don't forget to save a little for the proles to enjoy.

"The America of my time line is a laboratory example of what can happen to democracies, what has eventually happened to all perfect democracies throughout all histories. A perfect democracy, a ‘warm body’ democracy in which every adult may vote and all votes count equally, has no internal feedback for self-correction. It depends solely on the wisdom and self-restraint of citizens… which is opposed by the folly and lack of self-restraint of other citizens. What is supposed to happen in a democracy is that each sovereign citizen will always vote in the public interest for the safety and welfare of all. But what does happen is that he votes his own self-interest as he sees it… which for the majority translates as ‘Bread and Circuses' . " -- Robert A. Heinlein

Sorry fellows, I can't share your optimism. Dump is the world's richest professional clown. Absolutely devoid of principle, morality or humility. He made an impossible promise to build a wall, destroyed every other candidate as viciously and as dishonestly as the democrook media did in elections past, and hasn't put forth a single tangible agenda item.

I'm not sure if it because he has no real policy ideas, or knows the GOP would reject it. All I do know is that the worst man for job is once again the nominee.

I'm going to write in Yosemite Sam.

It's because NO ONE takes those policy ideas seriously anyway. NO ONE.

He is making satire of the entire system.

then you're the stupidest people on the planet

if you're going to be treasonous loons, go live elsewhere.

I am the stupidest person because I don't put much weight on crazy imaginary tales put forth by the candidates? Maybe you should go check the Sanders plan out and then ask yourself, exactly how realistic is this? Bunch of virtue signaling fluff talk...

Wow... you learn something every day.

no. you're stupid because you hate your country and don't care what you vote for.

He does not like losing, my guess he will morph into something that this country truly approves of.

trump is going to get crushed

there was an anti-trump majority.... but everyone tiptoed around him because they were afraid of him. he won because faux news used "national polls" (which at the beginning of a presidential campaign are totally based on name recognition) to isolate candidates and basically crush them before they could get a foothold.

when it became trump, the vile disgusting fascistic bigot versus cruz, the hated, religious zealot who every person who ever worked with couldn't stand.... the donald won. it's really that simple. if the GOP had a brain among it the nominee would have been kasich who would have won by 10 points and brought ohio with him.

but he wasn't vile and disgusting enough for "the base".
Now is the time for him to step up and be the person he needs to be. Short of that, I agree, he will fail.

he is the person he is. he is a vile disgusting bigoted misogynist

that is all he will ever be.

if he pretends to be something else and you're duped by it, that's your problem.

do you think women, minorities and the LGBT community are stupid enough to forget what he is?

women hate him. we're 52% of voters.

It is a hard sell, that in part, is his challenge and he needs to get more in line with how to deal with this country's problems

Nice piece, but the Democratic presumptive nominee got her butt handed to her in Indiana. Her opponent is pushing for a contested convention. It appears the Republicans are coalescing sooner.

I agree but there is more for Trump to do to get the outliers to back him. He came in outrageous and now needs to lead the party.

I'm not a Trump fan but I hate a sore loser and so I wish him the best. In regards to the hard part, certainly he'll have his challenges but so far it appears voters simply want change. Also Hillary hasn't been overly impressive in terms of these election results.

With Trump as president, women and minorities will prosper with increasing jobs and wages due to a booming free market economy and halting illegal immigration.
As far as lgbt, nobody gives a shit.

I would not be surprised to see him act more loopy after the convention. Maybe even drop his pants and moon the world.

He is a democrook Trojan Horse.

He is far too good at business to be a democrat commie socialist... Remember, these people could not run a lemonade stand if their life dependent on it. They are virtue signaling omegas, not alphas...

He understands how the world works. He will make America great.

Soros and Buffet are good at business. Trump voters were duped. There are endless examples of Dump taking different sides of issues depending on trendy opinions. I have zero optimism for our future.

Buffet is a virtue signaling moron par none. Trump speaks his heart.

Soros is a plain psychotic/evil individual. Nothing suggests Trump has plans of world domination.

Buffett has a much better reputation than Trump.

Except perhaps to rubes.

Not to mention that if Buffett had started out with Trumps inherited money and connections he'd likely have been the worlds first Trillionaire instead of just being able to buy out Trump 10 times over.....
