In a Republic, actually
‘The Florida Legislature and social media giants are clashing in a high-stakes battle over whether children should be barred from some of the most popular platforms on the web, a fight that could ultimately land in court.

Lawmakers want to stop children under 16 from creating accounts on social media sites like Facebook and TikTok, likening those apps to casino gambling, cigarette smoking and drinking.
[…]
But research isn’t settled on social media’s effect on children’s mental health. Experts say the issue is complex, involves a multitude of factors and can vary by person. The American Psychological Association concluded, “Using social media is not inherently beneficial or harmful to young people.”’

So much for conservatives being advocates of ‘small government.’

Conservatives need to understand that ‘small government’ is far much more than just irresponsible tax cuts and reckless deregulation.

They couldn't stop kids even if they wanted to. And even if they could keep them off one platform (they can't) they would just move to another.

Politicians are generally a pretty stupid lot.

Cell phones are a horrendous things for school kids. They should be banned. They serve as a distraction.

Thank God cell phones weren’t popular when I was in high school.

At the very least cell phone should not be allowed in high schools or middle schools. Youngsters are there to learn not to play on their phones. Certainly many adults don’t set a good example you go out to a restaurant in America everyone’s playing on their phone. I was talking with some senior citizens at the YMCA gym a month ago about this and they were shocked at things. They go into a restaurant they see all these people staring at their phone nobody’s talking to anyone.

I know I’m preaching to the choir for many people, but for the brain dead zombies apparently they don’t give a darn what their own parents or grandparents have to say about culture or life in general. Of course that’s what left-wing radical feminist BLM policies get you …they get people to hate their own parents and grandparents, and make up lies about them.

This is one of those things like abortion....
It's not something you can enforce.

I’m a traditional liberal Democrat. Imo free speech is under attack and some demonic Democrats will say

“oh, you think you could tell a business what to do”

Its there a way of excusing YouTube and other major political platforms like Facebook banning free speech…. Imo Either one is for free speech or they’re not …it’s a simple white and black issue. When you talk about major political platforms, the US government has to step in and demand and enforce free speech. It’s a white black issue either one is on the right side of free speech or against it. This isn’t the same thing as a small restaurant being able to kick out who they want. Not when we’re talking about YouTube, Facebook or Instagram.

Throughout American history, government and other entities have stepped in to do the right thing. For example, enforcing laws against child labor. This was the right moral thing to do in line with Christian values or any value system you can think of. Now I submitted is the morally right thing to do to ban cell phones in middle school and grade schools. Kids are there to learn. They’re there to learn and make America a better country. They’re not there to play on their phones.

Also, the government must enforce free speech on massive major political platforms. That is in line with a morally upright society.

This is not an anarchy.

If there were not laws against child labor. We would, of course have people in America employing 10-year-olds at sweatshops and all sorts of degradation. That’s how it is there’s always evil in our world and a proper law system fights back against that evil.

The cell phone issue is on a different level but it’s still very important. Again, I submit kids go to a middle school and high school to learn not to play on their phones. So yes ban cell phones while they’re there in school.

Total misinformation. A number of years ago, I researched social media on a number of psychology sources. To cut to the chase, I shut my Facebook account, and apart from a few forums, I've never had an X, Instagram, TikTok, Truth Social etc.. account, so none of those to close.

Yep, but it not is about if they can, it is just the fact they want to try. Each passing year freedom becomes more of a memory in this country.

Indeed, we need the Nanny State to keep us safe from ourselves. All hail the all powerful government.

By the way, you are aware this site is part of social media, right?
Grow some sarcasm. Or pull the stick out of your ass. JFC.

We should ban social media from anyone and everyone but I don't see how we can possibly do it.

And this is further proof that Republicans are incapable of responsible governance and sound public policy; indeed, they have contempt for both.

The state is facing an environmental crisis the consequence of the fact of human-caused climate change and a homeowners’ insurance crisis where property owners either can’t afford insurance or are unable to find insurance altogether – in addition to the state being near the bottom in the quality of public education and teachers’ pay.

Yet given the above problems and more, Republicans waste time with this ridiculous, unenforceable nonsense.

Every person of every age on social media I have seen behaves like an eight year old.

Society simply needs to work through this. It’s the same learning curve with every new technology. People are resilient. Equilibrium will eventually be reached.

The kids are much smarter, and much more tech savvy, than those that wish to remove them.

IOW, they ain't going to remove shit. It's just something that they can boast about, even though everyone knows otherwise.

Hey, look! Somebody is trying to blame a political party for something and keeps trying to make it sound credible!

Yup.

If they're told it's bad for them, they're going to want it more.

But of course it IS bad for them.

Terrible in fact.

Local schools have banned them during school time. That's a start.

Education Minister Grace Grace has announced mobile phones and certain wearable electronic devices like smartwatches will be banned at all Queensland state schools during school hours – including break times - from Term 1, 2024.6 July 2023

Schools banning them during the school day is fine and can be enforced, a blanket law banning anyone under the age of 16 from any social media site is just stupid
