From other sources, this "5 miles" was BOTH WAYS, OVER 3 DAYS.

That's less than a mile a day. Growing up I lived exactly a mile from school. I could have ridden a bus, but I walked -- every day.

This might b a great punishment today, but it was my daily routine

I also lived about a mile from school. Walked uphill both ways. It rained every day except in the winter when it snowed.

Times were tough back in the day but somehow we made it.

I got my frostbite outside of Wheaton, IL when I was in kindergarten in the 50s. I thought it was cool to walk through the snow. I still have problems with my feet.

I remember walking to school with the snow piled high on each side of the road in some cases taller than I was....I only had about a mile to walk though.
Call off school? Hahahahahahahahahaha!
