Actually, many of them missed their drop points and dropped anyway including the gliders. It took quite a bit to bring them into the fight. Weather was a huge factor. You can pick the day but it's hard to get the weather to cooperate.

Perhaps, but they only had a three day window or they would have had to wait another several weeks to launch. D Day was supposed to be on the 5th but high winds pushed them back a day. The 7th would have been the last day possible as the tides and the moon wouldn't have been favorable. Getting the landing craft in was more important than getting paratroopers in.

There had to be a high tide or the landing craft could not get close enough to shore. On the fifth here were terrible storms and most of the troops were seasick. There were still rough seas on the sixth and many of the soldiers were still seasick rendering them less than 100% fit for action. We also had 28 amphibious tanks which had never been tested in anything other than calm seas. All but one went to the bottom with the sea moments after being launched.

Had the invasion not taken place within the next two days, it would have been a disaster. It would have been a month before the tides high enough for the invasion to take place. Thousands of additional lives would have been lost and the invasion could have been a total failure.

They used heavy bombers instead of tac bombers, as were used @ Utah Beach......Also, it would have been helpful to have at least a regiment of paratroopers or glider troops dropped behind Omaha.

The DD tankers weren't taught basic seamanship...This caused them to fixate on their landing targets and turn the broad side of their boat shell against the waves, as the current pulled them off their desired course, causing them to swamp and sink.....The commander of the ship that launched them was also a chickenshit, and launched them too far out into the channel.

The Rangers at Pointe du Hoc always practiced the launching of their grappling hooks with dry ropes...The heavy seas of the day made a lot of the ropes wet, and many of the lines meant to be used scaling the cliffs couldn't be launched to the top of the escarpment.

When it was plain to see that the landing infantry had their asses hanging out with no heavy fire cover, it still took at least an hour longer than necessary to release the DDs to use their 5-inch guns for some artillery support.

There were numerous other fuck-ups that cost lives.....Attributing the bloodbath at Omaha to only one aspect of the plan that didn't go right is overly simplistic.
