Donald Trump's prediction that the U.S. economy was on the verge of a "very massive recession" hit a wall of skepticism on Sunday from economists who questioned the Republican presidential front-runner's calculations.

In an interview with the Washington Post published on Saturday, the billionaire businessman said a combination of high unemployment and an overvalued stock market had set the stage for another economic slump. He put real unemployment above 20 percent.

"We're not heading for a recession, massive or minor, and the unemployment rate is not 20 percent," said Harm Bandholz, chief U.S. economist at UniCredit Research in New York.

Be careful as labeling all those who would vote for Trump as nut jobs. There are those voting against the GOP establishment, and unfortunately Trump represents the least objectionable alternative to what many see as a diluted and increasingly impotent Republican Party. Most of the established GOP predicted Trump's candidacy would be a footnote at this point. They have continued to underestimate the growing frustration of conservatives with their lack of conservative leadership.

You have to give Trump a little gratis on this. He assumes that he will be elected and start trade wars with China, Mexico, Vietnam, etc., which would lead to a serious recession. However, since there is no chance that he will be elected, the economy will do just fine.
