Enough is Enough...Katrina my ass!

I always sorta thought of them all being in one big whiney bunch but then again I keep expecting them to be consistant in what they claim to be wanting too. :wtf:
one big whiney bunch for sure...consistant? Not on yer life. That's why their in a pickle on this one. They can't save the wet lands at the expense of the poor and they can't help the poor at the expense of the wet lands..Unless, they go the Government should fix it all route...which is what I think they'll do, when they come out from under their rocks and you know they will.

On May 6, 1935, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) was created to help provide economic relief to the citizens of the United States.....

Hey, maybe something like it could work to rebuild NO too..

That is an excellent idea. Let the people of New Orleans rebuild the city. They will have a stake in the city. They will keep the levees well tended. I really like that idea.

Coastal erision is a big American problem. You guys up north may not understand this but the wetlands you hear about is where the baby shrimp and fish live before they go out into the Gulf of Mexico. It is not a Louisiana problem. It stretches from Houston to Miami and beyond. You lose the wetlands you lose the nursery for the seafood you enjoy. From the last estimates ( they are old ) I remember we (Louisiana) supplies 50% of the nations fish supply.

There is a difference. First New Orleans was founded in 1718 and this is the first time that this has happened. That's a pretty good record. How many quakes did California have this year? There are rules and regulations already in place where it is a low lying area. For example if you build in Grand Isle ( a low lying area right on the coast ) then your house must be raised because it is going to flood. Maybe that law should be applied to Orleans and other flood prone areas. Second and I've said this a billion times this week. New Orleans is the gateway to Mid-America. Trillion dollars worth of cars, grain oil etc flows in and out the port each day. I doubt if Davenport Iowa is as important economically to the country. Also where do you think the farmers of the Mid West send their grain to export? NEW ORLEANS! As you sit in your urban or rural midwest area enjoying your power know that at least 25% of it came through Orleans.

Well cajun, I am a Cajun from the higher more stable part of Louisiana. . . Lafayette, where the real Cajuns live and the best Cajun food is found in mass(I had to throw that in for Mr. P who thinks fried squash is a gourmet dish). I think that as a historical landmark New Orleans has it's uses but as a major city that has always been very prone to flooding, disaster and is now a crime and murder capital, there is absolutely no reason for the federal government to fund much of anything there.
Baton Rouge makes more sense as a major port city and doesn't have nearly the problems except for crime which will no doubt be up with the influx of New Orleams population. With the rediculous amount of money that will need to be spent to bring back N.O. a new pilot channel could be constructed to the Gulf. Houston's port would pick up any of the slack that B.R. couldn't handle and the new channel would help lower the chance of flooding for all of the state by helping divert volumes of Mississippi waters. The sediment build up on the coast would help ease erosion of Louisiana coastline.
This would be a much wiser use of the money. This way you might lose some port activity but prices for shipped items around the country would be lower by getting cargo to East /West distribution centers quicker.
New Orleans may be a sentimental need for some but it is not something our country needs. Turn New Orleans into the Las Vegas of the south for entertainment and food and let the ship traffic go to a more intelligent place like Baton Rouge or Houston.

First let me say that Lafayette is where my heart is. I love that city and the Cajun culture. Look at my logo and if you are from the area you will see I graduated from the University of Louisiana. I grew up just south of Lake Charles. Lafayette is just as exposed to a cat 4 or 5 strom as is Baton Rouge, New Iberia or Lake Charles.
I'm disappointed that a fellow Louisianaina falls to see why New Orleans must be rebuilt. The French built New Orleans for a reason. It is the gateway for North America. Why are you even questing it? Bush said that America can't exist with New Orleans and it will be rebuilt.

rcajun,
I went to the same college when it was called University of Southwestern Louisiana. At the time Playboy rated it as the number 1 party school in the country. Why did they change the name?

I didn't say N.O. shouldn't be rebuilt, I suggested that the federal government should not be responsible for rebuilding a city that just doesn't make sense in todays world. Let the Donald Trumps of the country invest in creating something different, an entertainment capital a lot like Vegas. Why not try to better the city by letting private investors turn it into something that could generate a decent economy. The influx of cash from casinos would go a long way toward the rebuild effort. People are going to gamble, why not turn a historic city into a destination for tourist from around the world and cater to that end rather than not change and continue to worry about the really big threat called the Mississippi. That river has always been a problem for New Orleans and the Army corp of engineers have been fighting a losing battle for decades. Ad the location of Lake Pontchatrane and you have a bigger problem. That is why I suggested a pilot channel to the Gulf from Baton Rouge.

I am from Louisiana but have not been proud of what New Orleans has become since the election of the idiot Morial as Mayor. New Orleans has been a progressively scary place for anyone with light skin for a long time. Some French friends of mine visited 2 years ago expecting to hear great jazz and eat good food, instead they were made to feel unwelcome by every black person they came in contact with. Bullied in restaurants and on the street they left days early of their planned stay because they feared for their lives. These are people from France not stereotypical racist crackers. That is a huge problem for a place that depends so heavily on tourism, an attitude problem that will not be fixed with federal funds.

You see where I'm going with this. I refuse to call any people trash (God doesn't make trash) but the folks in the projects that were built in the 1960's have a mentallity that everyone owes them something. They are gone. Good luck to Houston and the other towns that took them in. Force them to start working and eventually they will become productive citizens of where they are. Sometimes simply changing their environment can do wonders. It was not uncommon to drive through the bad areas of Orleans and see young men of able bodies drinking a 40.0z at noon. America has been generous to these people and thank God for that but stop the handouts soon and put a shovel in those hands. They just might find that God has blessed them with talents that society needs. As far as Orleans, it will give the city a fresh start. As I stated before, New Orleans really never recovered from the civil war. We were the third world city in America.

God Bless Everyone

New Orleans helped breed a culture of lazy ass welfare recipients but wants the rest of the country to take care of them now? You say "Please give us billions of dollars to make our city better than it ever has been" but all you can say about your welfare recipients is good riddance and wish the rest of the country good luck with them? :finger:

I understand what your saying now and agree. Let business build New Orleans not government. However Baton Rouge can't replace New Orleans as the major port. The more you go up river the higher the costs. BTW USL changed it's name because the University of Louisiana sounds better and bigger than Southwestern Louisiana.

That's not exactly what I said. I believe people can change. I said they need to stop giving them handouts soon and put them to work. The change of enviroment may make that project mentality that was entrenched in New Orleans go away. Give them a FEMA trailer and some food stamps then put them to work. It's not like I was happy that they are in your towns and I was laughing because they were going to burden on your tax base. Many of them are in Louisiana. Baton Rouge and Lafayette have doubled in size. The projects are gone and I hope they can make a fresh start and new life in Louisiana are where ever they are.

First and formost I am Not a flatlander...I live at 6200'...just east of Tahoe...tornados are not likely at this altitude, earthquakes are buffered by the mountain range I live atop...we do get a fair amount of snow but not overpowering(occassional power outages)...we do have 'extinct' volcanoes in the area...the odds of them reacurring is greater than any lottery...sooo I do not plan on having to move anytime in this century! And I read others comments who are in agreement with my original diatribe...so I will not beat a dead horse! :cof:

Most people live where they can work. I'm sure you enjoy your power up there and that has to come from a port through of course oil. People must live on a coast. I guess I'm going to beat a dead horse. Most the domestic oil is produced off the Louisiana and Texas coast thus people live here. No I'm going to beat a dead horse. I'm sick of this. I go to work Monday and life is slowly returning to normal. I'm actually enjoying having my inlaws here. Enjoy your Saturday and may God bless you.

Sorry but my sympathy for Louisianna is shrinking by the minute. Prior to being hit by Katrina, New Orleans was a city of crime, political graft and welfare. I'm not saying that there were not some good people there nor deny it's importance as a port city but building a replicate with stronger levees will require money to rebuild miles and miles of ghettos for it's displaced welfare population. YOU should be the ones telling you OWN citizens to get of thier asses or lose the government freebies.
I think our welfare system has created a group of people who WILL not change. When you deny them welfare for not trying who is gonna sit and watch them die?
How can the rest of the country get all pumped up over fixing your city when LAs' poor are using up our resources?

I believe 'sitarro' covered this point on your 'port' issue..as a matter of fact the power I receive comes from the Los Angeles.Ca. ports...oil and processing refineries...not to say the Gulf Ports are not important...but they can be moved a little to minimize the damage from known storms!

And thank you...my Saturday is going well...I wish you also the best!

I agree with you for the most part. Please remember I'm not the Governor. If I was, I would order the equipment to rebuild the levees then recall those that have evacuated and haven't found work else where. I would put them up in trailers and put them to work. If you don't want to work then you will not have shelter or food. Sink or swim baby. They might actually develoep a
pride in themselves for be self suffcient and not having to depend on anyone.
If not they will be homeless. I will lose it if one project is rebuilt.

These people were a small minority of the population of New Orleans. Most New Orleanians and Louisianians are very hard working people. We have the most National Guardsmen in Iraq in relationship to our population than any other state. I've never been on any sort of welfare in my life. My father was one of the hardest working people you would have ever find. The Louisiana culture that the world loves, is work hard and play hard. I believe in God and people. These people will change. They will have to change.

I've just been trying to give you one "outsiders'" perception of the future of New Orleans and its' citizens. The media won't show the people who are stuggling to recover on their own with no help from FEMA, private donations or other sources of assistance.
Things I have learned from watching the news on TV since Katrina:

*The hurricane only hit black family's neighborhoods.

*New Orleans was devastated and no other city was affected by the
hurricane.

*Mississippi is reported to have a tree blown down.

*New Orleans has no white people.

*The hurricane blew a limb off a tree in the yard of an Alabama
resident.

*When you are hungry and need to survive after a hurricane, steal a big screen TV.

*The hurricane did 23 billion dollars in improvements to New Orleans:
now the city is welfare, looter and gang-free and they are now in your city.

*White folks just don't make for good news stories.

*Don't give thanks to the thousands that came to help rescue you,
instead bitch because the government hasn't given you a debit card yet.

*Only black family members got separated in the hurricane rescue
efforts.

*Ignore warnings to evacuate and the white folks will come get you and
give you money for being stupid.
