Does it concern you, that the U. S. Military is monitoring web sites such as USMB?

Damn I'm glad that our spy agencies are on top of all this. Just think how screwed we would be if they weren't.

And in case you didn't know we had been tracking Bin laden waiting for the opportunity to capture him when the US Newspapers announced to the world that we were tracking his cell phone. DUH, He quit using his cell phone.

There are simply some things that we do not need to know about.

Shh, it's a secret.

Very interesting point Ollie. If American technology, and military intelligence are so great, why haven't we caught bin Laden in 9 years.

On the other hand, bin Lauden is a Saudi, and we all know about America's loving relationship with Saudi Arabia. Mayyyyyyyy-be some one does not want to find bin Lauden.

Blaming U. S. newspapers for announcing we were tracking bin Laden's cell phone? I don't know....... Could it be incompetent national security, or was it a leak to the press?

As far as your statement, "There are simply some things that we do not need to know about." That's not being prepared, isn't that burying your head in the sand?

No it's things like the NSA tracking Bin Laden. I don't know how the NYT found out about it. But they did and they certainly wasted no time telling the world about it. This is only one instance that we didn't need to know. When I went on certain courier missions, they were classified. The fact that anyone from my Unit was in a given area was classified. I stepped outside for a smoke with some embassy guards once, while on one of those missions. When I got home the Mrs asked me what the hell was i doing in ******. Seems some news crew came by filming and there I was. I didn't go on any runs for 6 months........Things that we the average citizen do not need to know. There are hundreds of thousands of them. Some pretty serious some just simple nothings that can be added together to paint a bigger picture.

Thank you for your serious response.

No it doesn't :eusa_shifty: really, I um find it quite comforting :eusa_shifty:that they have such important uses for their time :eusa_shifty:and our tax dollars, really, I do.:eusa_shifty:

Good point, no one has brought up the extraordinary cost of all this security. A quick glance at Google shows old information, and nothing I saw showed a dollar number. There was not even a ball-park estimate.

Only people who should be scared are those who are providing material assistance to terrorists and our enemies. And those people I want scared.

That is true, until the completely innocent group you have been supporting for years, say, for example, Focus on the Family, suddenly pisses of the man in the white house and you are now providing material assistance to terrorists and enemies of the state.

I think if they desire control then they need information. To those ends, I say we should all dedicate a week of forwarding ALL of our spam, bills, and email jokes to them daily. It couldn't hurt. It might help. What do you say, people?

I'm honestly far more concerned about the National Security Agency's continual monitoring of our every communication via Project ECHELON, than anything the Military is performing.

ECHELON is how the US Government tracks down suspected terrorist cell phones and such. It was created about 40 years ago to thwart the Soviets, but now is used for virtually everything, and is mostly classified.

Whoa! I am the one who has been looking for balance between privacy rights, and overly reacting to concerns about BIG BROTHER. I am surprised that I had not heard of this ECHELON until I read your Wiki link. If the Government has been working on this since the 1960s imagine the technological power they must have. It sounds like the Bruce Willis/Justin Long movie, "Live Free or Die Hard." Maybe BIG BROTHER is already everywhere. Thank you for the information.

Maybe?
Really??
Holy chit mon, this is a surprise to you? You wrote about COINTELPRO and THIS surprises you?

now you're talking, girl!

i remember cheering a few years ago when i read that bill gates was receiving up to 8 million spam messages a week that he had to pay a whole crew to deal with.

no wait! maybe we don't want to do that to the gummint.

we'd be footing the bill for them to deal with the deluge.

Departments have to work within the given budget. THAT department would have to work within one as well. :eusa_whistle:

I don't spend my waking hours worried about Big Brother, but it sounds like you have gone way past concern.

I don't think the FBI is interested in monitoring my boring opinions on a variety of topics.

ever heard of keywords?

like "obama" "israel"

we agree google sells its search's for each ip adress, to the goverment... when certain key words are searched... certain systems are activated..

much like the phone company that does the "wire tapping" they dont sit there and listen to every conversation.

wow thats is EXPLOSIVE news..that keywords like Obama and Israel could activate systems.. kind of TERRORIZING..the technological REVOLUTION

No, if there is not enough porn the Intel guys get bored and move on.

It would concern me more if the government was not monitoring internet activity.

Given how powerful this communications systems is, they'd be falling down on the job if they weren't paying attention to it.

I don't know if the military is the right organization to do it, but certainly some intel organization ought to be.

The issue isn't that they monitor, the issue is really what are they looking for?

As always the real problem is...

Who will watch the watchers?

Actually, I took a class in privacy, security, and freedom. Very interesting (and eye opening) stuff. You're in more danger of falling down in the tub than ever being the victim of a terrorist attack, and the proportion of resources spent preventing that, and the freedoms people are willing to cede to do the same, are disproportionate to the actual threat.

Yet during my 22 years on active duty I came within 15 minutes of being a casualty in three different terrorist attacks in Europe. Once with my wife present.

So, what are we saying here. Spend more money on national security, keep spending as it is, or reduce spending on national security? What kind of changes should we make for monitoring the Internet?

Since no one on this board has a real clue about what NSA monitors and how they monitor it I would say to simply allow them to continue. And until we get national security up to a decent standard yes, we should spend more. There are many less important things that can be cut. Not to mention fraud, waste, and abuse.
