You probably do not know how the Civil Rights Act was passed. LBJ could not get the segregationist southern Democrats to vote for it. He called Ev Dirksen the Republican minority leader in the Senate for help. Dirksen delivered the votes from his fellow Republican Senate members and the Act passed. If there is credit to be given it belongs to LBJ and the Republicans who voted for it.LBJ was scum of the Earth. He did maybe one thing right, and that was his support of the Civil Rights Movement. He deserves a pretty low place in history for Vietnam and for being every bit of the scumbag that JFK was when it came to women.
He had no option on civil rights so I can't give him credit for even that. There was no way to stop the tide.
Lady Bird for her beautification of America campaign was pretty cool. Man I remember driving down thru Detroit in the 60's and even as a kid long before I became a conservationist being just appalled at the landscape.
Both LBJ and JFK were married to women they could have never deserved. That's actually not that uncommon of a trait though in First Ladies. There's been a few notable exceptions, but the women to hold that position have typically been among the best in the nation, while their husbands could barely measure up.
A little history lesson. Read and learn!
