Beginning with FDR, and Truman, actually SINCE FDR, Democrats have been the party of civil rights, and of the oppressed. LBJ became a "liberal" due to shady tactics, to phrase it mildy, during his time in Texas, before fate made him President. He took up the cause of black Americans with a vengence however.
