Discrimination against smokers

Not to change the subject, but I think employer paid healthcare insurance is a big part of the healthcare problem. I'd rather they just give me the money in the form of higher wages and let me pay for my own.

Bingo!

We can thank the wage controllers during the World War II era for this mess.

Of course that is only one half of the solution. In order for this to be practical, I'd have to be able to buy my own insurance at a reasonable market rate. The system is so fucked up today that if you try to buy family coverage outside of a "group" plan they gouge the living shit out of you.

what right do businesses have to control a worker's freedom outside of the workplace?

this is another group of elitists telling others how to live their own lives imho! what's next?
The smokers are free not to work there. That's what anyone honest who claims private businesses should set thier own smoking policies will tell you.

and i say bullcrap to that.... not that the business should not allow it at work, but outside of work it is none of their business... what next? they won't hire you ....or fire you if you have a glass of wine after work? or 10lbs overweight? sltppery slope, and a big one imho.

Look at Japan.
It is coming.

It would cost you more and you could be denied if you had any kind of pre-existing condition like diabetes. Employer plans are group plans where the risk is shared across many people to help level out the cost between folks who are young and healthy and probably don't visit the doctor much those who do. Trust me, you do NOT want to go it alone. That is why people who don't have health insurance DON'T have it. They can't afford it.

The risk inherent in all insurance policies is spread out of many individual policy holders... car, life, homeowners etc. Why does healthcare insurance need to be any different? I'm not part a "group" for any of my other policies, yet I still get it at a fair price.

There are group plans that individuals can get in on as well. It's not impossible. You have to do some homework. But there are plans out there.

Ultimately this is about saving money on the company health plan and any other benefits (e.g. Life Insurance) that the employer provides.
They could stop providing these to all employees.
But that really isn't fair to those that are not degenerates. ;)

What about fat people? Isn't heart disease one of the biggest killers?
I have worked with fat lazy people and I have worked with smokers, I would rather work with a smoker.
Smokers stink and take too many breaks. Fat people are jolly and always share their candy bars. I'll take Fatso over Stinky every day.

Thats it in a nutshell

If enough employers did this, I'd guess that the market would correct for this.

Does anyone think with a Government Universal Health Plan this type of thing is not going to get worse?

What do you think about this? Do you think they would get away with a similarly "health conscious" policy of not hiring fatsos?

I think it's their right to hire or not hire who ever they want for what ever reason.

You mean like the right they have to announce they no longer hire blacks on account of not wanting supplies to go missing?
No, but they could announce a policy of not hiring convicted thieves for such a reason.
They even allow people the right to STOP SMOKING and reapply. Really all it would take is for the smoker to go without for a few days to pass the test and then they could go on sneaking the way many do in no smoking area right now.

Well, I agree with you. They have no business telling employees what they can or cannot do outside of work so long as they are abiding by laws. For that reason I'm glad Obama has said that in hiring practices religious organizations can no longer discriminate against people who are not members of the same religious group that the organization represents.

But smokers are never discriminated against in any situation and it's laughable to claim they are deserving of special status It's the product that is the undesirable element, not the person imbibing it. Even though addiction causes many to think that they and their drug of choice are one and the same being they are free at anytime not to do the drug.

Yeah, they could sneak around like queers in the military.
