Actually, in the military, you DO have First Amendment rights, but in order to exercise them, you have to check with the PAO (Public Affairs Officer) first to check if you can go in uniform or not. If it is a partisan event, you have to go in civilian clothes. If it is a general event (Memorial day and the like), in certain cases you can go in uniform.

And no...............the military is NOT supposed to keep their mouth shut and follow orders. In Navy Rights and Responsibilities (required annual classes), you were told that you are supposed to obey all LAWFUL orders, but if you know an order to be unlawful (they order you to wash their car or something that isn't in your job description, or against regs), then you not only have the right to refuse to follow it, but you have the duty to report it as well.

A soldier who has a complaint with the chain of command must go through military channels and has no access to civilian courts for that complaint.

Hey, on the ship, MS (Messcook) is one of the big 3 rates that you don't mess with. The other 2 are PN (Personnelman) and HM (Hospital Corpsman). Lots of Navy cooks that I've known have gone on to become chefs in upscale places.

If you're meaning the basic mess hall attendants, that is only a one time 90 day requirement for anyone that is E3 or below.

Actually, my retired ID card, my pension, and the VA would disagree with your estimation of my service. So would the Navy. And yeah, if you know an order to be unlawful, you have the right to refuse to obey it. I had to do it a time or two when a SCPO was telling me that I had to bend the rules to get in one of his applicants, and I told him no, not gonna break the rules just so you can meet goal. Then, I took it up with my MCPO and he took care of the problem for me.
