Washington (CNN) -- Republicans rode a wave of voter dissatisfaction with the state of the economy to win majority control of the U.S. House of Representatives in Tuesday's midterm elections, while Democrats retained their majority in the Senate.

With results still coming in, the extent of the Republican takeover of the 435-member House was still to be determined. But CNN projected that Republicans would win at least 52 more House seats than they currently hold to wipe out the Democratic majority of the past four years.

Republican candidates also were running strong in governors' races, while Democrats were guaranteed of holding at least 50 of the 100 Senate seats with a handful of close races still outstanding, according to the projections based on CNN's analysis of exit poll data.

No, Congress, the lower house, has power of the purse.

Congress is the Senate AND the House.

The President submits his budget requests to Congress, and each chamber has a committee that drafts up their versions. Both versions are then reconciled in a conference committee, and this version must pass in both chambers to be binding.

This thread may be premature. Buck has pulled ahead in Colorado, and Fiorina holds a small lead in California. We could see a 50-50 split.

Meh, my math fails tonight. Even if Fiorina and Buck succeed in California and Colorado, it's till 51-49.

Ah well, at least we have a divided Congress now. Gridlock and stalemate is better than forced agendas and partisan politics.
