Democrats More Liberal, Less White Than in 2008

While it's nice for Gallup to generate specific numbers, this is hardly surprising. Pretty much every neutral commentator predicted that the Republican/conservative would rebound from its low point in 2008 (though most people didn't expect it to do so as quickly as it did). We're seeing independents and moderates, who are more likely to be white and/or male drift away from identifying as "Democrats".

I think the more interesting trend is how many people identify as "Independent", a number that has been steadily rising over the years. While many of these people still reliable vote for a particular party, more and more people don't claim the party label. If this trend keeps up we could see something really interesting, like a strong third party or a drastic shift in one or the other party's ideology.
