For all of you who love to lay blame on the Republicans for everything, let's have a brief history lesson on Social Security.

Franklin D. Roosevelt, a Democrat, introduced the Social Security (FICA) Program. He promised:
(a) Participation in the Program would be completely voluntary.
(b) The participants would only have to pay 1% of the first $1,400 of their annual incomes into the program.
(c) The money the participants elected to put into the Program would be deductible from their income for tax purposes each year.
(d) The money the participants paid into Social Security was put into an Independent "Trust Fund" rather than into the General Operating Fund, and therefore, would ONLY be used to fund the Social Security Retirement Program, and no other Government program.
(e) The annuity payments to the retirees would never be taxed as income.

In 1958, the Democratically controlled Congress voted to remove funds from Social Security for the first time and put it into the General Fund for Congress to spend. President Eisenhower approved of this measure. The logic was that there was so much money in the Social Security Fund that it would never run out or be used up for the purpose it was intended and set aside for.

The Democratically controlled Congress under Lyndon B. Johnson continued the practice of taking money from the Social Security Independent "Trust Fund" and putting it into the General Fund so Congress could spend the money.

Which political party decided to begin giving Social Security payments to Immingrants? It was the Democrat President Jimmy Carter and the Democratically controlled Congress who decided it would be a good idea to give Social Security payments to immigrants who had moved into this country - even though they had never paid a dime into the Social Security Program.

Which political party started taxing Social Security payments? It was the Democrats with Al Gore, the Vice-President and President of the Senate at that time who cast the tie-breaking vote to begin taxing Social Security payments. President Bill Clinton signed the bill into law.

With this brief history of how the Democrats have managed our Social Security funds, can you honestly say you want the Democratically controlled Congress to set up a program of government controlled health care for all Americans? I'm not so sure that would be wise given their past history of managing America's money.
