Greece took 30 years to enjoy the results of Democratic Socialism. Venezuela took 20. For a while everyone partied, but now of course they are paying the piper.

Sorry folks. The USA of the 21st century looks much more like Greece and Venezuela than Denmark or Sweden, but at least we'll have diversity.

The difference between socialism and capitalism is that capitalism works everywhere it's tried. Socialism works nowhere it's tried.

Although what that has to do with America I have no idea.

And socialism and capitalism can operate hand in hand, because socialism isn't communism.

diversity isn't going to pay the bills......

Italy may be the next country to crash......and it is a pretty big socialist country....

Socialism does work in small units from families to small wealth-producing homogeneous countries where people identify with each other. The United States is neither.

If you mean mixed economy then yes, but even then the negative effects can be seen on the GDP growth. There is a dial, it goes from bad to worse.

Even in families, just picture your 5-year old voting with you what to YOU should do next. This is a recipe to failure.

Greece and Venezuela tried to marry socialism and capitalism. That was kind of the point of the thread.
China is attempting the same......and look where it's headed......
Don't be silly. China has abandoned both socialism and communism. To say that they are attempting democracy is downright ditsy. Democratic Socialism was the issue anyway.

Give it up or find another thread to pollute.

sorry but China has not yet given up communism.....there is still centralized control......

"First, many of China's state-owned businesses weren't actually privatized at all! What happened was that they were listed as private companies, allowing outside investors to own stock in them. But the government retained majority ownership, meaning that the government could always call the shots."

China Is a Communist Success Story. Kinda.

They can call it whatever they want. The fact is government is done completely controlling the economy. Same has happened to eastern European countries in the 90s and now they too are well on their way to prosperity, from a socialist nightmare.

You couldn't be more wrong.

Capitalism failed rural America in many ways. Starting with electricity. Or should I say the lack of it. There are many other examples/failures as well.

Every country apart from fascist dictatorships marry socialism and capitalism. American sport is the most socialist things since old joe stalin's sliced bread. Welfare is socialist, workers rights are socialist, unions are socialist, prohibitation of child labour is socialist and all didn't exist when businesses could do whatever they liked. You're pathetically oversimplified "capitalism good and socialist bad" mantra is getting tired, politics isn't always a game of point scoring.

That's nonsense. The Nazis were both fascist and socialist. And like everything else, socialism is a matter of degree. Wherever it is pursued to a greater degree than the essential, it fails miserably. You have Thatcher to thank for preventing the UK from being a Greece or Venezuela.

We only have one thing to thank that witch for and that is bringing the real danger of CO2 emissions in to the public domain. She politically desenfranchised an entire generation and we are only now seeing the green shoots of recovery from it.

As for the the Nazi's being socialist? That's the most laughable pile of horse shit that anyone on the right ever says. Hitler's party was far right, and no amount of wriggling and pointing to the little things makes any difference. You're on the same political side as Hitler, just live with it like the left has to with Pot and Stalin.

You are obviously an woefully uneducated. Hitler sounds far more like you than Thatcher or Reagan:

"We are socialists, we are enemies of today's capitalistic economic system for the exploitation of the economically weak, with its unfair salaries, with its unseemly evaluation of a human being according to wealth and property instead of responsibility and performance, and we are all determined to destroy this system under all conditions."

Why is it that when it comes to modern politicans that legally deemed fit for office but they don't hold exactly our views then we happily claim that every single word that comes out of their mouth as an utter lie, but when it comes to genocidal madmen who plunged the entire world in to a war then one quote is all it takes for someone to claim they're "socialist". Hitler and the Nazi party were RIGHT WING, no amount of quotes from his biography will change that. You only have to look at the party's history from its early days attacks on socialist groups to the rounding up and killing leftists of all types during the final solution to see you're spouting bullshit. I'll say this one more time RIGHT WING.

If 'capitalism' worked so well when 'unfettered', why were the reforms of the late 19th and early 20th centuries necessary (trusts, child labor, health regulations, working conditions and hours, etc.)? Everywhere that 'capitalism' works it is because it is tempered by social consciousness.

First of all who said those were necessary?

Ah, I forgot, you are a liberal regressive and would send your kids to mines to work, right after the usual beating you give them to exert your will on them.

Anyway, those are hardly defining characteristics of anything. They are the classic regressive fluff words that mean precisely nothing. Even if those regulations were justified, they don't mean you get to take half of anyone's income, so try again!

I really find it funny when a regressive comes to take credit for solving a problem that was already solved by capitalism by the time it happened. It's special kind of irony...

Also "working hours" need to be regulated? Can't you yourself decide ANYTHING about your life without a regulator forcing its will on you? Holy hell, a person who can't even decide how many hours to work every day without gov regulators coming in is truly pathetically inept!
