Land Of Enchantment
A Democratic lawmaker in Nevada has introduced a bill that would outlaw air fresheners and candles in public places. But some critics said the proposed law goes too far – and would even prohibit priests from using candles in Mass.

Democratic Assembly Paul Aizley, from Las Vegas, presented his bill Monday. It would set restrictions on pesticides, fragrances, and candles to accommodate people with “chemical sensitivities.”

i think it is ridiculous...

someone with allergic/ sensitivity to the smells/chemicals can leave.

Jesus Christ--can we just ban everything that affects our senses and totally do away with our ability to recognize reality ?

Air "fresheners" are truly nasty things. If the general public was aware of the chemicals in these, the sales would plummet and they would be gone.

Which, they need to be gone, but not via more legislation and more nanny.

Take an odor====any odor===why is it that if a few people out of 100 don't like it, it gets banned ? We're succumbing to our weakest links. We will be a society that is unable to tolerate anything.

Lol...

It's misleading since thanks to insurance issues, most *public places* can't burn candles anyway. State offices cannot have anything burning in them at any time, and workers can only plug in certain things that must be approved. In bigger offices (especially SPD) workers are told not to wear scent, or at least to wear only very subdued scent.

Here's the deal...I have a client who is disabled. She was exposed to toxins as a professional diver (don't ask me exactly what she did, I don't know if she retrieved stuff or did underwater construction stuff) and the result is she became wildly sensitive to everything chemical, PARTICULARLY scent. To the point where she can't go anywhere because she reacts to deodorant, soaps in the aisle of the stores, cleaners, disinfectants, you name it. She starts coughing, her tissues swell, her joints hurt, it's not just a little sneezing or a headache.

Here's the kicker..she applied for disability based on this; she can no longer dive (her range of motion is also affected, and her breathing is compromised when she comes into contact with chemicals, so diving isn't a good idea. And there are always chemicals in water, at least anywhere she'd be working). A condition of her disability application being processed was that she go see some sort of doctor or allergy specialist for a diagnosis...but the ALLERGY specialist wouldn't require his employees to swear off scent and deodorant for one day so she could come in. It's crazy! Just one day, c'mon, these are the people you are supposed to be helping!

And while she is a little crazy, I imagine (aren't we all) her distress is real and acute. She's not lazy, she's not stupid. She's never been in my office because she can't come into the building; she reacts to the stuff that's always in there. Again, the cleaners, air fresheners, perfumes. When she comes to the office, I run stuff out to her in her rig.

Anyway. I'm not for making candles illegal, that's stupid, but it can be a real issue to people. Just sayin.

Nothing but poison, anyway.

I said it was stupid.

I also had an interesting experience on facebook of all things with this same sort of b.s. It was national peanut day or something stupid like that, and my friends are posting peanut butter recipes and stuff...and this one person got all bent out of shape and said that peanuts were deadly to her child, to the extend that if someone has touched them and then touches a shopping cart, he can react to it, or if they have pb on their clothes...and she got really pissy that everybody was sharing PB recipes, lol.

So I of course, being the sensitive and considerate soul I am, went directly to the Reese's site and shared it...mmmmmm.....I'm pretty sure nobody has ever died from looking at PB products online, but I could be wrong.

I mean, everyone appreciates the allergy thing, that's terrible, but a moratorium on eating peanuts? Seriously?

Allie...we had a girl at work who was just as bitchy about onions. Said she was so allergic, even the smell made her sick. We weren't allowed to eat/bring anything with onions in it anywhere on the floor. And if she smelled them she whined to management. Crazy.

I guess my next project will be stocking up on candle making stuff and making Homemade candles...incase they get banned (jk).

Illuminating Thoughts – Toxic Candles
Paraffin candles are as dangerous to the lungs as second-hand smoke and even more so if you are in the habit of burning many at the same time. It is also a non-renewable resource. Ever smell one? They stink. (info
