It's not new. The article dated 2012 and the amendment was approved in 2010.
The law, at least today, doesn't grant full property tax exemption to synagogues as is stated in the petition, but only those places inside synagogues that are directly connected to the worship. All places of worship in Israel are tax-free. The law just specifies the meaning of place of worship in synagogues, such as classes of teaching Torah. It has nothing to do with churches.
It is an impudence on the part of churches in Israel to highlight such a minor thing while avoiding to pay huge taxes related to their commercial activity.
