I'm age 63 and have so far. The only time I notify the police is when I'm a victim of vandalism on my vehicle, or house. That way, I've started a 'paper trail' in case I have to put a hurt on the perps if I catch them.
The average American will be a victim of some sort of crime at least, 4x in their life.

That really has nothing to do with being capable. Many years ago I gave a seminar on the psychology of self defense. Most people are not capable. They won't pull the trigger, they won't thrust with the knife, they won't put a 4 inch nail in someone's eye.

When I gave the seminar, it was clear that few women were capable of self defense. Today, I'm sure that more men would be just as incapable.

Yes you could but it kind of seems that if your actions have the blessing of society then it is easier to use appropriate actions to defend yourself. Imagine a society without laws (anarchy). One could defend themselves from others but people often want to retaliate in such situations. An example is you kill Fred because Fred was trying to kill you. Barney doens't see it that way and decides to retaliate by killing you. Have some rules that everyone agrees on seems to eliminate those situations where differing opinions on what is the just use of deadly force would lead to endless violence. Barney might be OK with what happened to his friend if he agreed before hand that the actions taken against him were legal.

And having the law behind you seems to make defending yourself a lot easier since you never have to worry about a mob who wants revenge on you.

His friends are not like that either, what are you 90 years old with the dying phase of life causing you to doubt existence and the younger generations? I have many millennial cousins that are hard core veterans and hard ass civilians that have careers or are retired from their military careers, others are teachers. electric linemen, you couldn't last a week doing what they do...
