Lest we forget Harry Truman sent troops to Korea under (an illegal?) executive order and LBJ was able to put American troops in Vietnam with a faked crisis. If the media doesn't care than neither will the people. They managed to blame the whole thing on Nixon anyway.

You do not know that the Gulf of Tonkin incident (Vietnam) actually happened? The North Vietnamese themselves admitted to it.
