President Obama on Sunday praised the "historic" House vote to pass a bill overhauling the nation's ailing health care system, and said now it is time for the Senate to "take the baton" and complete its work.

The House passed its health care bill late Saturday night by a 220-215 vote, with 39 Democrats in opposition and one Republican supporting it. Senate approval is considered less certain due to opposition by all Republicans and some moderate Democrats.

Obama called the support by many House members "courageous" in the face of what he called "the heated and often misleading rhetoric around this legislation."

The overhaul legislation would be the biggest expansion of health care coverage since Medicare was created more than 40 years ago.

The Affordable Health Care for America Act, or H.R. 3962, restricts insurance companies from denying coverage to anyone with a pre-existing condition or charging higher premiums based on gender or medical history. It also provides federal subsidies to those who cannot afford health insurance. And it guarantees coverage for 96 percent of Americans, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.

Gotta feel the love from Congress for the US Constitution.

Maybe someone ought to remind them of it. I'm wondering if an email campaign - sending each and every one of them a copy of said document is in order?

Of course, we'd also need to explain phrases such as 'general welfare' to the incompetent critters.

How do you feel about socialism? Like that too along with the health care bill Pelosi and gang are trying to ram down our throats? Neither Congress or Obama is worth the amount of gunpowder it would take to blow them all up. I have my doubts that what they are trying to do is even allowed by the Constitution. How can the government mandate a person to buy anything let along health care insurance? Our country goes down the toilet more and more every day.

Insurance companies do not deny coverage to people with pre existing conditions. They simply charge them higher premiums to cover their higher medical expenses. By insisting everyone be insured at standard rates, this bill, in effect, mandates that standard rates will have to be increased so that everyone who now has health insurance will have to pay more for it to subsidize the higher medical bills for people with pre existing conditions. Far from being a progressive solution to the problem of higher premiums for people with pre existing conditions, this bill means that some one who earns $50,000 a year will have to pay more for his insurance so that some one with a pre existing condition who earns $500,000 can pay less.

The individual mandate will somewhat offset the higher health insurance premiums this reform will cause, but we know from Massachusetts' experience that health insurance premiums will still increase because of this bill. A cheaper and more progressive solution would be to have sliding scale subsidies to help people with pre existing conditions so the rest of us don't have to pay more to subsidize high earners with pre existing conditions. Because this would keep insurance premiums lower, less money would be needed for subsidies for low earners. Even if you agree with what it is trying to do, almost nothing in this bill is good policy.

After reading the bill for 8 hours i agee with you all. But here is my story. I have and injury from a couple years ago my doctor informed me that he will not do the xrays or surgery because the insurance company may not cover it. This limit's my working ability. Sure they can raise my premiums but i feel i still have the right to have the surgery done regardless of it being a pre existing condition & so should every one else

Have any proof that anything in this bill violates the Constitution? Lucky for you our system allows you to question the Constutionality of this bill. I encourage you to file a challenge if you feel so strongly.

If you don't have true objections, why don't you just Bitch on a message board?
