congratulations : Hitler's 'Mein Kampf' to be republished in Germany

Out of print for 70 years, Hitler’s ‘Mein Kampf’ to go on sale in Germany

n Kampf” will go on sale in Germany next week after its copyright expires on Friday, marking the first time in 70 years the book will be legally reprinted in the country.

The German state of Bavaria has held the copyright for Adolf Hitler’s autobiography since 1945 and has withheld publishing the book, preventing any reprints in Germany. But in 2016, the book becomes available in the public domain, which will make it widely available in Germany for the first time since World War II.

Hitler began writing the first volume of the autobiographical “Mein Kampf” in 1923 whileimprisoned in Landsberg prison for an attempted coup to overthrow the government of Bavaria. Published in 1925, the first volume of the book lays out Hitler’s overview of the problems facing German society, his support for dictatorship and the racial hatred underpinning his beliefs.

The book gained popularity in 1933 as Hitler became Reich Chancellor, and by 1945, it was translated into 18 languages and sold 12 million copies.

The Institute of Contemporary History in Munich will release an approximately 2,000-page annotated edition of “Mein Kampf” on Jan. 8, 2016. The version will include critical commentary aimed at deconstructing and contextualizing the work, according to astatement from the Institute. The book will cost 59 euros ($65).

Critics have raised questions about the value of reprinting a book that contributed to inciting racial hatred in the years leading up to the Holocaust, said Steven Luckert, Senior Program Curator at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Levine Institute for Holocaust Education.

“It’s generated a lot of fears in Germany and elsewhere that once again, Hitler’s words could resonate with audiences,” he said.

But some scholars have argued that continuing to ban the book does not prevent people from accessing it — “Mein Kampf” is available for download online — and that a reprint with historical analysis could have educational merit.

Josef Kraus, president of the German Teachers Association, has voiced support for using the book in schools, saying it could help students think critically about extremism.

“A professional treatment of excerpts in lessons can help immunize against political extremism,” he told German newspaper Handelsblatt.

A reprint that puts Hitler’s words in context could be helpful for students, Luckert said.

“With critical commentary that contextualizes the book, that explains where these ideas come from — the insidious nature of those — I think that can be very helpful for people to understand something about those words and what they mean,” he said. “In a world in which you have a lot of hate, a lot of anti-Semitism, a lot of racism being propagated through various forms of media, I think it’s important to confront those in meaningful ways.”

“Mein Kampf” was never banned in the U.S. but remains banned in Austria and the Netherlands. In France, publisher Fayard will print a French version of the book.

Easily one of the most whiny, boring books I have ever read. No wonder progressives love it...

There is not a conservative on this board who isn't whiny and boring.

Progressives out whine cons by over a five to one margin. Believe you me, it shocked the heck out of me when I first became a Mod!

That sounds like you're admitting you're a Mod with an anti-liberal bias. Just my HUMBLE opinion.

Oh, and while we're at it,

Hitler vilified democracy. He saw it, effectively, as mob rule. Eh? Never heard that before have you?

You mean how obama despises Congress and rules by fiat...er Executive Order. The Germans had those too did you know that? They were called Fuhrer Directives. obama vilifies democracy with every statement he makes.

Still better than Marx's works, which are widely taught at American universities.

Not even close to true.

I prefer to be informed, so decided to read the books of great evil. I read the Communist Manifesto, which is a well written, albeit poorly conceived work. I read Capital Vol. 1, which is surprisingly intuitive. Despite the flawed conclusion of Marx and his failure to grasp what capitalism actually is (19th century psuedo-feudal industrialism is not capitalism,) it is filled with many valid observations.

I read the Koran, the infernal book of evil of the Muslims. A bit boring and a clear plagiarism of the Old Testament, but readable.

But Mein Kampf is the rambling of a mad man, I could not get through it. No rational person can find any value in Hitler's ranting vomitus.

Nope. I'm a liberal. I was just shocked that PROGRESSIVES (they are different from liberals who support LIBERTY from government, go ahead look it up) were so whiny. Don't get me wrong there are a couple of cons who are super duper whiny as well, but the overwhelming majority of whiny people on this Board are progressives.

Hilarious that Hitler is the lefts role model for individual rights and liberties. Makes perfect sense

Yeah, yeah, we know how you love to claim he was Christian. The facts are quite different however, he was an atheist. He paid lipservice to christianity because he had to, but as with all totalitarians his religion was him.

"You are right that Hitler did mention Christianity many times in his writings. He paid Christianity a lot of lip service in Mein Kampf, and he claimed to be a Christian. But Hitler's secretary, Martin Bormann, also declared that "National Socialism [Nazism] and Christianity are irreconcilable" and Hitler didn't squawk too much about it. Similarly, Hermann Rauschning, a Hitler associate, said, "One is either a Christian or a German. You can't be both." In addition, Hitler declared Nazism the state religion and the Bible was replaced by Mein Kampf in the schools. You really want confusion? Randy Alley, one of my best WWII history sources, noted that the SS were supposedly forbidden to believe in God--yet the military's belt buckles said "Gott mit uns" ("God is with us")! See photo, below."

The Straight Dope: Was Hitler a Christian?

Dear Fuehrer Obama won't support any candidate not in favor of his Hitler inspired gun reforms.

We will only disarm the groups we intend to eliminate -- Hitler Obama

congratulations : Hitler's 'Mein Kampf' to be republished in Germany

What's the problem?

We need things like that around, to remind us just how sickening and warped the authors were.

Just as some commentators have said, after modern liberalism is finally overcome and consigned to the ash heap of history, we'll need a few liberals still around to remind us just how kooky, irrational and strange such people are.

In both cases, we need the occasional reminder so we'll never be tempted to do anything like that again.

Still better than Marx's works, which are widely taught at American universities.
If you take philosophy class...

That is not correct, women studies, sociology, even freaking (mandatory) language classes require reading that not only teaches, but takes Marx' words as a gospel. Where did you think this Marxist outbreak of bad ideas is coming from? No sane person would read one of his completely ridiculous works voluntarily, let alone start supporting the ideology (which indeed has killed even more, significantly more people than the Nazis).

Just out of curiosity, could you please take a moment and enlighten us on the subject of Marx's Theory of Economics?
Just patronize me if you would.

So, as a college student I should extol Marxism ?
I was a film student, all I studied was the Marx Brothers...

I'm just curious as to what Norman knows about the Theory of the guy from whose work he would never read one word and yet reviles.

I heard Norman doesn't know sh!t about Marx's Theory of Economics.
But he's probably frantically googling whatever he can about it to look as little stupid as possible.
To be CUNTinued...

Wow... I can't believe that these guys are actually defending the ideology that has killed more people than any other...

Dudes... I don't need to read Mein Kampf to know it's a bad idea. That being said I do know fair bit about Marx, and yeah it's no accident that people have died as a result of inept economics and morality.

I am still waiting for these guys to state that "You don't know a thing about Mein Kampf, why you criticizing!!". Truly astonishing, and no absolutely nothing to do with 6 million dead jews.
