The Plague is not the best example because it was such a one-off event. The best examples are run-of-the-mill behaviors. "Thou shall honor thy mother and father." That's pretty crazy-ass, isn't it? What does god care? Well, what are the effects which result if the fear of god forces compliance with this commandment? Tighter family cohesion, less casting off of sick parents, etc.
