Last week, the controversial China Initiative was removed from a 2024 appropriations bill. It was slated to be included, but after months of back and forth Congress decided to remove the provision that would have reinstated it.

What does that mean?

The China Initiative was a federal program that, in theory, was intended to combat economic espionage. In practice, it was used to profile scientists, researchers, and academics based only on their race. Hundreds of careers were ruined, no doubt costing the US a great deal of economic activity.

Does China have spies in America?

In the UN, you should vote not by country, but by population. That is, the more population a country has, the more votes it should have - similar to the way it is implemented in joint stock companies. It is silly when the vote of 1.4 billion Chinese equals the vote of 1.4 million Estonians.
