Of course, the concept of royalty holds no traction in the U.S., though for much of the time that they were prominent, the Kennedys were popularly viewed as the closest American equivalent to royalty. And, of course, since royalty really means nothing to us, Mary Jo Kopechne's life was of no less value than Princess Diana's.

So ,if we assume that Britain's royal family did have a willful hand in the death of Princess Diana, then Ted Kennedy's careless hand in Ms. Kopechne's death would be about the closest equivalent possible to that.

I never could stand Ted Kennedy. I agree his political career should have ended then. I never had much use for the Kennedy family, but then again I hate any notion of political dynasties in the US.
