Francois Hollande, French President-Elect, Confirms Afghanistan Exit In 2012

After his election to the French presidency on Sunday, Francois Hollande wasted no time in following through on one of his highest-profile campaign pledges.

Hollande's communications director, Manuel Valls, confirmed to the Telegraph on Monday that France will "announce the withdrawal of its forces from Afghanistan between now and the end of the year." The announcement will take place at the NATO summit being held in Chicago on May 20 and 21.

Members of the International Security Assistance Force, the NATO-led coalition in Afghanistan, agreed in 2010 to end their combat role at the end of 2014 while slowly transferring control of sections of the country to Afghan security forces. Hollande, however, pledged a much more rapid withdrawal than envisioned by NATO during his run against outgoing President Nicolas Sarkozy.

Jean-Yves Le Drian, a foreign policy advisor to Hollande and potential defense minister, told Reuters last month that "French combat troops had no business in Afghanistan now and a pullout should be executed within eight months."

It's about time that intelligence and humanity takes over.

The next time Germany invades France they can keep it.

Shortsightedness fueled by misunderstanding
Playing the world's policeman has been the downfall of EVERY empire in the world... and we really don't even have an empire. So why are we going to repeat the mistakes of old again?

We are not "playing the world's policeman." That is an empty, ill-informed, lefty slogan.
Far from it. BTW, I'm Washingtonian in my foreign policy, Not Rooseveltian, Not Monrovian, not Wilsonian. We should let the world deal with the world's affairs and not try to moderate, arbitrate or dictate it. I do not agree with internationalism.

I do agree that if attacked, we should blast our attackers back to the state of existance where Bronze is considered high technology and quit pretending we're making the world a better place by nation building when all it does is breed resentment and hostility that always bites us on our charity in the end.

This is not an ill-informed, empty lefty sentiment. It goes back to the desires and cautions of the founding fathers. Stay out of other nation's shit or you'll get covered in it. Although, if you are hit, make sure they cannot hit you a second time.

Germany isn't the problem. The problem is that to exist, socialism, nazism, and communism require the extermination, deportation, or shunning of anyone who objects to its mass takeover of every aspect of humanity in minutia with even less restrained human beings than the good neighbor sort that capitalists are.

Then why are you celebrating this? Socialists have no intelligence and most mongrel dogs have more humanity.

Though I do think that the United States should stop paying for Frances defense. Hell, all of NATO for that matter.

Ah yes. And the old joke.

If it makes you feel better I'll call you short-sighted. We are not out in the world to 'protect' other countries or 'play policeman' or any of the other popular bromides. We go out into the world to advance and protect OUR interests. It's too late - and foolish - to pretend the world isn't pretty well intertwined at this point. It will not make us prosperous or secure to hide at home threatening to destroy the world if any trouble finds us (as it inevitably will if we try to pretend it doesn't exist) or to imagine that we can just barter among ourselves and ignore global markets. "Screw the rest of the world! We'll just focus on us!" is an emotional outburst, not a rational position, and doesn't hold up to the least examination. We absolutely should look out for #1, but you can't do that hiding behind the sofa with the doors locked and the lights turned out.

Got it. You're a Wilsonian globalist.

Go ask Ron Paul for more talking points. You're not doing very well with these ones.
