Can Capitalism and Democracy Coexist?

yes folks on welfare will always turn to the govt for more welfare! Most importantly capitalism is like democracy in the both depend on the individual. Liberalism is like communism in that both depend on the govt not the individual.

Therefore the more liberal socialism the less democracy
"Capitalism and democracy are like a lion and a bull pulling a sled together." Democracy is the substantive process by which we collectively organize ourselves to perform capitalism: the "what" and the "how" of human society, and it is the balance between the substantive and procedural which creates justice. Currently, capitalism, with its preference for love of things over fairness, is destroying the very fabric of democracy. Does that make Hayek happy?

An excellent question, GP, but one not answered by Hedges.
The pressing question is can a capitalist economy - or any economy for that matter - survive once people realize they can vote themselves freebies from the gov't trough which are paid for by the confiscated wealth of a decreasing number of producers? At some point the Golden Goose can no longer produce.
INEPTOCRACY:
a system of government where the least capable to lead are elected by the least capable of producing and where the members of society least likely (or willing) to sustain themselves are rewarded with goods and services paid for by the confiscated wealth of a diminishing number of producers.

Yet the richest "producers" vet all those least capable politicians for the slackers to vote for. The threat to democracy in the US comes from those who value short term profits over the human rights of generations of Americans as yet unborn.

The problem, both with your analysis AND with our current situation, is that the voter has allowed money to equal political power
How has the voter allowed money to equal political power in the US when both major parties rely on the same 1% of voters to fund their election campaigns and retirements and voters have only two realistic choices on their ballots? Every government in history as served its richest citizens at the expense of its majority by socializing costs and privatizing profits, usually through generous application of war and debt.

If you believe "we the people" are the government of the US, why wouldn't we depend on government (ourselves) to provide for us? We depend on government to print the money. Government provides the infrastructure to regulate and protect money and contracts. It is only when government is corrupted by large concentrations of private money, which stem from gutting those formative cultures and institutions necessary for democracy to survive that democracy dies the kind of slow death we are seeing in the US today.

THE FUSION POLITICS RESPONSE TO 21ST CENTURY IMPERIALISM FROM ARAB SPRING TO MORAL MONDAYS - Online University of the Left

1) The largest single problem is the willingness of the uninformed voter to accept the propaganda put out by the government. Their goal is to keep the voters happy in order to retain their position and their power. That propaganda is for their own best interest, not to educate the voter. Look at how many times the government has 'redefined' the unemployed computation methodology. They know that, if they can keep the 'unemployment rate' below 6%, the voters will be placated. So, they manipulate the formula to ensure that it always comes out at 6%. Voters hear 6%, and they don't look any further. Most voters are too lazy, or too ignorant, to actually look in to the real picture.

Look at Obamacare - the American public is just now beginning to get a glimpse of the reality of that monstrosity.

2) "If you believe "we the people" are the government of the US.. " Clearly, we don't believe that any more ... some of us see it as the government is control of our lives, others see the government has an enemy of the people.

3) The government can only corrupt the government by 'large concentrations of money' because we are unwilling to educate ourselves, instead preferring to just sit back and accept what is going on.

"We the people" are working more hours than ever before, and in exchange we're receiving less and less of increasing productivity gains resulting from our labor.

Both major parties depend on 1% of voters to fund their election campaigns and retirements, leaving workers and others with a "lesser evil" choice that only delays the inevitable.

Perhaps we need a wall of separation between private wealth and government? If Americans can pull that off, we will fire the second shot heard 'round the world.

good Marxist Idea!!! Then the people too stupid to have private wealth could run the country!!

I wonder what our founders had in mind when they gave only property holders the right to vote and hold office. Its crazy, anybody should be allowed to vote and hold office and be a doctor regardless of qualifications

Didn't that decision have something to do with those property-less misfits who survived the blood-bath for Independence earning the right to vote?

Voting and being a doctor requires qualifications. Liberals don't care about quality since their subversive objective is to use democracy to sell welfare and gain political power.

No taxation without representation, remember?
Why do conservatives hate the poor?

yet again for the stupid communist, conservative capitalism in China just saved another 60 million from slowly starving to death.

see why we say liberalism is stupid? Is any other conclusion possible?

I thought it was 40 million.
How's the corruption among your new BFFs?

dear the corruption is so little compared to when under liberalism that instead of 60 million slowly starving to death, 60 million can now buy cars!! Slow?
