Netflix has an awesome documentary on the making of this movie.
At least 5 times it almost didn't happen, even mid way through filming it - it almost didn't happen.
In the scene with Chevy Chase and Bill Murray was the first time they were in the same room together for a long time with their famous feud.
Most of that scene was improvised by both.
In fact nearly every scene with Bull Murray was totally made up "live". Which was out of necessity, because he barely showed up on set for the entire movie due to his hatred for Chase.
Dangerfield also made up more than half of his lines.
