While electric cars are heralded as an environmental-friendly vehicle option for consumers, they come with one major problem. Most have very limited ranges that force drivers to stop every so often to recharge their vehicles.

But the British government is working on a possible solution.

Last week, Highways England, the government department that monitors major highways and roads, announced plans to test a new technology system later this year that would allow low emission vehicles to recharge wirelessly.

Highways England’s “off road” trial will install wireless technology under the road to allow electric cars to recharge as they drive over the surface.

The new technology could alleviate one of the biggest concerns for consumers with electric vehicles: Waiting 30 minutes or longer to recharge a vehicle.

A whole bunch of people working on increasing the density and decreasing the cost of batteries. Billions of dollars to the company that succeeds, won't be long before we see at least a doubling of present density, and, maybe, a lesser price at the same time. However, all the ideas are welcome.

That would make EV's a viable alternative. Not as good as what Tesla himself envisioned, but a good start.

That approach will EXTEND range, but probably not come near making charging unnecessary. Nissan Leaf is 0.3KW-hr per mile. At 60mph -- you burn that in 1 minute.. You'd have to charge with an 18KW source just to keep EVEN.. Not gonna happen. And people are already afraid of high voltage lines and magnetic fields.

You'd probably extend city driving range by 10 or 20%.. I'd be surprised if it was more..

Would work just as well if you only placed the charging field at Stop Lights and parking lots. So maybe the cost wouldn't prohibit the small benefit..
