During the height of the Cold War? Back then telling someone you were a Commie was liable to get you the kind of treatment I'm experiencing in Canada. You simply didn't do it.

To then join the CIA and rise to the top? I have to say when I first heard this I thought it was fake news. For an agency that takes precautions as the CIA does, it's really astonishing. I don't know how well he scored on other metrics, but his recruitability outside of this red alert voting choice had to be off the charts.

You could vote for Communists up until 1984, so it was LEGAL to be a Communist. So it's LEGAL to vote for them.
