I wonder if the fault for this is that Google is further retaliating against the Gateway Pundit and marking the site as "insecure."

You don't know what that means, do you? A site that is "insecure" is one that doesn't correctly implement https protocols. All modern web browsers either require https connection on initial attempt and only allow http upon a user's manual override, or they have default settings to require https which would have to be deactivated by by a knowledgeable user.

Https protocols create a secure connection between the server and the end user that prevents a third party from being able to intercept the data mid stream. These secure connections are accomplished by utilizing an digital encryption certificate that is signed by a trusted provider. When a certificate is not able to be validated, or when the website server doesn't bother utilizing a secure connection in the first place, the browser will display an insecure connection warning.
