Bill to remove Pot from Federal regulation sponsored in House

This only has 6 sponsors so far, and hasn't even been taken up in committee, but it's a start. Lets see if it even sees the light of day.

Cosponsors - H.R.1227 - 115th Congress (2017-2018): Ending Federal Marijuana Prohibition Act of 2017

The crux of the text as it amends the Controlled Substances Act of 1970

Prohibition On Certain Shipping Or Transportation.—This Act shall not apply to marihuana, except that it shall be unlawful only to ship or transport, in any manner or by any means whatsoever, marihuana, from one State, territory, or district of the United States, or place noncontiguous to but subject to the jurisdiction thereof, into any other State, territory, or district of the United States, or place noncontiguous to but subject to the jurisdiction thereof, or from any foreign country into any State, territory, or district of the United States, or place noncontiguous to but subject to the jurisdiction thereof, when such marihuana is intended, by any person interested therein, to be received, possessed, sold, or in any manner used, either in the original package or otherwise, in violation of any law of such State, territory, or district of the United States, or place noncontiguous to but subject to the jurisdiction thereof.

So basically Pot would get the Alcohol treatment. States can regulate it, and all the feds do is punish people who try to bring it into places where it is locally banned.

Wow, what a great thing for the United States and the world it would be if we'd end the idiotic war on at least pot. Though ending the entire war on drugs would be far better

Well, considering it's direct link to schizophrenia I can see why the DC establishment would want the people to have it.

No, there is no direct link in the sense that marijuana doesn't make people schizophrenic. It's that the symptoms of schizophrenia can be made worse by smoking marijuana. Alcohol also makes it worse.
Marijuana leads to schizophrenia.

If you want evidence, look at every leftist.

Plus marijuana causes cancer.

"I smoked Marijuana once, it made me want to rape and kill!"

um'kay?

or people who schizophrenia go to pot to try to treat it.

Correlation is not causation.

And modern vaping technology removes most of the cancer risk from pot, same as with cigarettes.
Wrong, wrong, and wrong.

It's amazing, people come up with an improved way to inhale things like nicotine and cannabis and the ban-happy-killjoys find other ways to try to make people enjoy only the things THEY enjoy....
Yes, let's bypass the FDA and experiment on people!

Will be more fun than thalidomide!

Yeah? No one will ever smoke outdoors or get in a car high?

Dumbass moron.

Now that pot has been more or less legal in some states for a while, scientists are finding additional evidence that pot is not harmless.

Yeah I had a 10 lb brick of buds fall on me in the warehouse the other day. Dangerous stuff.

[...]

This bill isn't going to see the light of day with Republicans owning both houses. If you want change you'll have to make it to the polls this coming NOVEMBER in the midterm election cycle and vote for DEMOCRATS who may do something with Marijuana. They are more pragmatic. Republicans will ALWAYS fight marijuana tooth and nail.

The major opponents of marijuana legalization are the pharmaceutical industry, the liquor industry, the prison industrial complex, the law-enforcement union complex, and the legal profession. In addition to those politically influential entities are a number of relatively minor opponents such as the drug-testing industry, various religious and community organizations, et al. Combined, one can only wonder how much money, in the form of contributions and lobbying funds, finds its way from those interests to the pockets of legislators and high-level government officials.

Yep. That's one of the many benefits of legalization - reliable information about the risks of use. We also get better quality control, and people don't have to deal with potentially dangerous criminals to get their weed.
Yes, using people as medical experiment fodder is a wonderful idea.
Let's just eliminate the FDA and let anyone put out drugs.
We will eventually find out which ones to avoid.

About 46 years ago the National Commission on Marijuana and Drug Abuse (a.k.a. "the Shafer Commission"), appointed by then-President Richard Nixon, formally made its recommendation.

"Neither the marihuana user nor the drug itself can be said to constitute a danger to public safety,"

Nixon Commission Report Advising Decriminalization of Marijuana Celebrates 30th Anniversary - NORML.org - Working to Reform Marijuana Laws

The so called Drug War was the biggest scam in the 20th century and looks like it's going to help usher in a new age of Fascism in the 21st.

WTF? People have been experimenting with mind altering substances since, forever.

Know what's really great fun for the Drug Warriors out there. Take some pictures of some babies born with defects because of Thalidomide and make up stories about them like they were caused by {whatever drug you're against this month} like maybe LSD! Have at it Crime Stoppers!

It just seems counter intuitive to make a plant illegal.

If you want to make hashish illegal, fine.

If you want to make distilling any drug out of plants illegal, great.

But I would have thought, but by the 21st century, humanity would have evolved to the point, where making a PLANT, one that grows out of the ground, illegal, contraband, would have found, is sort of absurd notion to it.

Anyone ever read "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy?"

There is a passage in there that reminds me of this debate. .

“Thank you. Since we decided a few weeks ago to adopt the leaf as legal tender, we have, of course, all become immensely rich. [...]

"But we have also," continued the management consultant, "run into a small inflation problem on account of the high level of leaf availability, which means that, I gather, the current going rate has something like three deciduous forests buying on ship's peanut." [...]

"So in order to obviate this problem," he continued, "and effectively revalue the leaf, we are about to embark on a massive defoliation campaign, and...er, burn down all the forests. I think you'll all agree that's a sensible move under the circumstances.”

Quote by Douglas Adams: “Thank you. Since we decided a few weeks ago to ...”

Dude.................you are really showing your ignorance with your ban the FDA and experiment on people comment.

Why? Because the FDA is the agency that runs drug trials, which in effect, is experimenting on people. Some are given the drug and they check out the side effects, while others are given sugar pill placebos. It's actually the definition of experimenting on people.

Funny how you ignore the posts in this thread saying it is good that marijuana use is now telling us about the effects and go after my sarcastic response to such asinine statements.

Then if it is so safe and is such a miracle drug, put it thru the FDA process for drug approval like every other drug used in the US must go thru.

But there is a reason no one does.

It's all bullshit. It's about getting high.

The benefits to cancer patients is undeniable.

So what if it IS about getting high? That’s all alcohol is for.

Unfortunately, because marijuana is classified as a Schedule I substance, the only research that is allowed to be done by the government (FDA) is the research that says how bad it is. Schedule I substances are considered to be highly physically addictive with zero medical benefit, and are not allowed to be researched for the positive effects.

THAT is why no research on the benefits has been done by the FDA. Remove it from Schedule I down to Schedule II or III, and then doctors all over the country will be able to research it and prescribe it.

And, there has already been research done by people outside of the government that shows it does have benefits for health.

Bullshit excuse. People study every known drug out there, from pot to PCP. Easy to obtain permission for medical studies. That's how they came up with the pills that provide the beneficial chemicals cancer patients saw when smoking pot.

But pills don't get you high, so no one wants to go that route.
