Because the Job of the Federal Government

Kids should be able to compete. It's part of life. I hate that garbage about "oh no, little johnny will feel bad if his butt gets kicked at dodgeball".

As for walking to school, that's ok if mom doesn't have to get to work after dropping off the kid. ;)

Agreed on junk food and birthday treats, as well as healthy lunches.

Ultimately, I also think it's our job to make sure they're given proper food and have enough physical activity outside of school.

I think one of the major problems is that when we were growing up, you went outside to play after school... no computers, no video games. You knocked on your friends' doors and picked them up or were picked up or met at the park. There were always a group of moms around to keep an eye on your kid and no one was going to grab him/her going down in the elevator or down the block.

Different world now... and moms let their kids stuff their faces with McDonalds.

Well we always had tv, we just didn't watch it much. Having competed in gymnastics as a kid, I probably had more 'scheduled' time than most. At the same time, we rode bikes, walked to school, library, soda fountain, etc. For the most part it was, "Come home when the street lights come on." Sure we had time that we had to do chores, homework, etc. For the most part though, we weren't sitting around eating.

I don't really think the problem is 'McD's' as much as boredom.

Whether we agree or not, schools are dropping competitive games and such in gym. Recess has become a joke. Many schools are removing playground equipment for liability concerns.

A friend of mine and I grew up in an explorer type environment and were discussing what kids do today vs when we were growing up. We played dodgeball with a basketball while lined up against an old brick building. When we aimed our goal was to inflict pain on the person standing up against the brick wall. lol. We were given knives at the age of 5 or 6, hunting rifles then too. We'd jump off roofs, stick things in electrical outlets, clean fish with a very sharp knive....yes all before the age of 10. We played in barns, jumping out of lofts, played in silos, drove riding lawnmowers, swam in ponds while things were biting us. We'd go to the er with some regularity. Ride our bikes over ramps while doing the no hands thing, with no helmets. Played football and baseball in the street with no helmets. Built things with wood and with real nails and hammers. Played in abandoned shacks and refrigerators, aimed bottle rockets and roman candles at each other, shot each other with the old daisy bb guns Went sledding behind trucks that pulled us through the snow on public roads. Were bitten by dogs, and got into fist fights without being expelled from school, climbed water towers, and hung tobacco. And we always kept score.

Nowadays, even if your kid wanted to do that stuff, he'd be all alone!

Yep, I couldn't imagine being a kid today, all couped up in the house with all the gadgets, playstations and whatnot. Being inside the house was the last place we wanted to be.

I grew up in a mostly developed suburb of Chicago. There was a rather large subdivision being built on one of the few parcels that was vacant. That became our 'adventure' playground for about 5 years. We walked the frame, including the upstairs, (there were 2 sub-basements); collected slugs and nails; tried using the slugs in every available pay phone around. Needless to say, the 'excitement' found there, nails through shoes and all, beat the 3 playgrounds in the neighborhood. The police regularly made us leave, but like today's graffiti artists, we went back when they left.

We'd ride our bikes, at about 8 years old, about 5 miles to Graue Mill, a forest preserve, that was actually part of the underground railroad before the Civil War. One time we found a newborn puppy, covered with maggots. We brought it home for my mom to 'fix.' Uh, that didn't go over well. We regularly messed around in the Salt Creek there, in spite of the signs warning, "Do not touch this water, wash thoroughly if coming in contact with it."

Bikes definately played a big role in our young lives. Nothing was more fun than riding behind the bug sprayer in the summer evenings. I'm sure it was DDT.

We walked the railroad tracks, jumping off as late as we dared. Twice some klutz got their shoe stuck, we yanked their foot out of the shoe. They had to explain to their parent what happened to the shoe.

There were moms at home, but they certainly didn't follow us around, they would never have let us do the things we did.

Lieberman isn't a dem. Or do you think Dems should all be rabid righties?

If you have something to contribute to the thread, that's cool. If not, I can't be bothered.

Again, was Nixon a RINO? And don't you think physical fitness is important for kids?

I'll wait.

Your attempt to claim YOUR party KNOWS who is and is not a valued member while denying the same to the other party is Hilarious.

As for your question.... It is not the Governments job to dictate what we can and can not eat, nor whether or not we exersize.

PE should be mandatory in lower grades and recess should exist as well. But guess what? If Fat little Billy and Marsha do not put up much effort in PE and sit around during Recess, so what? Or are you now demanding they be FORCED to play and FORCED to exersize?

Lets play this game... If A woman has a personal , private, right to murder her unborn baby because of a Constitutionally protect right to privacy, I suggest everyone has the right to eat what ever they chose and to be as FAT as they want to be. That would fall under a right to privacy as well.

Thank you Liberals for destroying the cultural that breed the above behavior. Oh wait your a liberal.

What is it about our liberal friends who insist that others be made, forced and banned? Why do y'all enjoy legislation that pervades into our lives and why give them so much power to control our lives. If someone wants to eat something, that god forbid, has fat in it.....so what. I just don't understand govt interference into our lives. We've got a complete circus in DC and I wouldn't trust them running a generator.

I don’t speak for liberals. Most things are relative and subjective. Don’t you insist that certain things be banned? What is your position on marijuana – should I be allowed to consume it? You don’t understand government interference in our lives. Do you think that prostitution should remain illegal in most states? Do you think most forms of gamboling should remain illegal in most states? Do you think that nothing consented to by informed adults should be regulated or outlawed?

No, you're right. I favor a very limited or small govt. I have no problem with gov regulation as long as it is practical and logical. And, as you say, it is subjective. I'm primarily concerned about the knee jerk stuff and then all of a sudden let's ban type of thing.

Yep. Some people want us to be allowed to buy cocaine. Some people want to outlaw alcohol again. Some people think we should be more permissive. Some people think that we should be less permissive. Some people would legalize “A” and outlaw “B”. Other people would legalize “B” and outlaw “A”. It comes down to picking and choosing. I used to think that pornography should be outlawed. Now I don’t. I used to think that incest among adult should be legalized. Now I think that it should be illegal.

Point is, the government is WAY too far into our business. Don't want to eat food high in sodium? Don't.

Seems to me they have far more pressing issues they should be working on than how much salt I sprinkle on my food.

What seems to have been missed is that this is NOT banning anything. It is merely making some things unavailable in public schools. While, obviously, the government should not be banning sugar/sweets/whatever there is no reason that the government has a responsibility to provide it for sale in schools. The government should not ban the sale of cigs/alcohol/porn/knives, but nor would I like them selling any of those things in public school even to kids who were above the legal age to buy them.

Schools are supposed to be run by LOCAL school boards, the Federal Government has ZERO authority and ZERO business telling them anything. Further the Individual States are responsible for Education not the Federal Government. There should be NO Federal Education Department, they have no Constitutional authority to run it, tax for it or supercede States rights on it.

I think that boat sailed when the feds decided to tell them to stop segregating.

This is probably the only problem I have with this law, that it should be done on a lower state-wide level. However that the government doesn't feel it necessary to actively provide kids with shit that is bad for them doesn't trouble me in the least.

Actually, my mayor is Michael Bloomberg. And last I heard, he was a NY'er and not from Cali. But there ya go.

Sorry that I got you mixed up with a CA liberal—but my mistake is understandable because there's not a whole lot of difference between a CA liberal and a NY liberal. :D

What do you think of the reports circulating that your mayor is considering a run for the presidency as an independent? Since he would have little appeal to Red State voters, the Democrat Party had better try to get a game plan worked out to deal with him. I did note that Obama met privately with Bloomberg recently, so maybe a deal was worked out that Bloomberg will become Obama’s vice-presidential candidate. That would defuse an otherwise problematic situation and would be one sure way to wrestle the nomination from Hillary.

And tell me, was Nixon a RINO? Or was he a normal repub and not like the loonies who have hijacked the party?

It’s been more than 30 years since Nixon was president. Personally, I have very little interest in how Nixon would be perceived today.

As to "loonies" hijacking the GOP, no more so than the ultra left hijacking the Democrat Party.

... and moms let their kids stuff their faces with McDonalds.

And they have the liberty to do that if they so choose, but the government does not have the authority to tell them that they cannot. Where in our body of laws does it say that the government has authority to tell people or their children what they can or cannot eat?
