Batwoman' creators quit, saying DC Comics forbade lesbian marriage

If you ever take time to read some comics you'll see there's all kinds of twisted and depraved shit that always seem to be happening in them. Gay/lesbian superheroes are pretty damn tame compared to some of the graphic sex/language/violence/drugs that regularly appear in those things.

I have to add that DC and the DC universe are complete garbage compared to Marvel btw.

Like the Superman porno film?

The BDSM in Wonder Woman?

Or Superman spanking Lois?

DC is anti marraige, especially in the New 52, they are not anti gay.

The ironic thing was that Batwoman (and the first Batgirl) were introduced back in the 1950's to be Batman and Robin's "Beards".

You see, one of the slams on Batman back in the 1950's (Lead by well known crank, Dr. Fredrick Wertham) was that Batman and Robin were gay.

Not that scenes like this didn't help make his case!

So Katherine Kane and Betty Kane were introduced as Batwoman and Batgirl to assure readers that Batman and Robin had a serious case of the "not-gays".

I stopped reading comix when the price hit $1.50.

I used to have original editions for the XMen, Spiderman, Fantastic Four, you name it. Each edition was worth around $250 or more. My sister gave em to her kids while I was overseas. She still has my High School diploma somewhere when she pilfered my bedroom.

And she wonders why I won't lend her any money. It's not exactly a loan with her. It's more like a grant.

Too political? Or too limiting? And as an aside...is there a big market for gay superheros?

The creative team on DC Comics' "Batwoman," a comic book starring a lesbian crimefighter, have quit the title, citing editorial decisions by DC that they say "compromise the character and the series" — including the scuttling of a planned wedding between Batwoman and her policewoman girlfriend. But while acknowledging editorial differences with the creators of the GLAAD award-winning comic, DC maintains that they are not related to the character's sexuality.

Writer W. Haden Blackman and artist and co-writer JH Williams III wrote in a blog post that they'll leave the comic after issue 26, the Hollywood Reporter said. Since the comic launched in September 2011, the pair had chronicled the adventures of a lesbian of Jewish descent who, inspired by Batman, finds super criminals as the masked vigilante Batwoman. Meanwhile, in her civilian identity as Kate Kane, she conducts a romance with police detective Maggie Sawyer.

In issue 17, Batwoman popped the question to Sawyer, the first lesbian wedding proposal in a mainstream comic. But in a tweet to a ComicsAlliance.com editor this week, Williams said, "We fought to get them engaged, but were told emphatically no marriage can result."

In their blog post, Blackman and Williams wrote, "In recent months DC has asked us to alter or completely discard many long-standing storylines in ways that we feel compromise the character and the series." Among the "eleventh-hour" directives they said left them "frustrated and angry," the creative team said that they were "most crushingly, prohibited from ever showing Kate and Maggie actually getting married."

What the fuck is wrong with you people? The writers specifically said that same sex marraige was not an issue, and you have to lie about it. And you want me to believe that you don't have an agenda.

Who is "you people"?

Good for her/him!

Batwoman is SO BUTCH and it is time she comes out of the closet.

In your crazy little world? Possibly.

Batman and Robin, Green Lantern, Spiderman, Wonder Woman, Xena, Batwoman. Daneille Baptiste, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, mystique, Northstar, Sailor Moon.

By next year Superman and Wolverine wii transform.

2 things. First, that's an infinitesimally small percentage of comic book heroes.

Second, SAILOR MOON??? Link please. So my inner 10 year old self can live out one of his dreams.

There are lists, and lists, of the hundreds of gay superheros listed. I forget where I saw Sailor Moon, but if you search sailor moon gay, you will come up with numerous references, mostly videos.

Considering most of the characters you listed aren't gay, I wonder where these lists come from. :eusa_whistle:

The Gals would just love the sado-masochistic men being represented in a "Wonder Woman" movie as the original comics portrayed..well, some maybe.

I expect many of the people shrieking in dismay over this have absolutely no idea of what some of the early WW comics included!

Aren't all the superheros now being depicted as gay?

In your crazy little world? Possibly.

Batman and Robin, Green Lantern, Spiderman, Wonder Woman, Xena, Batwoman. Daneille Baptiste, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Mystique, Northstar, Sailor Moon.

By next year Superman and Wolverine wii transform.

Oh, by the gods...

Batman and Robin: no.
Spiderman: considering he's MARRIED to MJ Watson...no!
Wonder Woman has been bisexual pretty much from day one.
Batwoman was originally (1950's) written as a love interest for Batman.
Harley Quinn is the Joker's girlfriend!
Poison Ivy's love is plants, not people.
Mystique was married (to Christian Wagner, deceased) and has two children. (Graydon Creed & Nightcrawler)

Too political? Or too limiting? And as an aside...is there a big market for gay superheros?
And the LGBT nazis continue their crusade to pervert every area of American society and culture. ..

Well.....I know why the gay community relates to superheros. They identify with having to hide who you really are and living a secret life etc. I just don't see the general population relating to the gay "idea" of the superhero. Not sure why they need to be gay or bisexual to prove a point.

Why is that exactly?

Because he's a stupid and/or evil shit, I have pointed out many times that he's a stupid and/or evil shit, and as a result, he acts a little like an annoying chihuahua trying to bite through my boot when he sees one of my posts.

Considering the multiple billion+ dollar revenue of a few comic-book based movies, I don't think they can be considered just for kids.

Some of the comics out there are actually quite adult.

They certainly are written in a more mature manner than 40 or 50 years ago!

I recall seeing somewhere (no idea where) that the average age of comic buyers is something like 30. They are not for kids and have not been in a long time!
