BAN AR-15 GUNS

Scalia found an individual right to keep and bear arms in the fact that every adult would be considered a member of the 'citizens militia' in times of war and also for home defense.

If such a militia call up occurred the 2nd Amendment makes clear it shall be "well regulated ". Today we have a professional militia - The National Guard. It is well regulated. There is no call up of the citizens militia. That really leaves home defense as the only legitimate reason according to the Supreme Court. Yes hunting is also legitimate by custom and convention.

As 'constitutional originalists' always say, we must only consider the meaning of words as they were understood at the time of their writing. Therefore the proper meaning of the word firearm is a single shot muzzle loading flintlock.
Hand guns, shot guns and hunting rifles are common sense modern comparables. Modern high power, semi automatic, high capacity rifles designed for 21st century warfare are not.
The idea that the framers of the Constitution in their desire to in part "Insure domestic Tranquility " would intend the 2nd Amendment to allow one person armed with a weapon with the comparative firepower of a battalion of 18th century soldiers to enter the town square is absurd.

Weapons designed for modern warfare have no place in civil society. AR-15's and the like should be banned for civilian ownership. All citizens can joint the militia and be trained to use the weapons of today. They'll learn that well regulated militias store their arms securely in the armory, not laying around the bunkhouse...

After AR15's are banned, and the generous buyback amnesty period is over anyone found in possession would face criminal charges. No doubt many would keep their weapons but there would be no confiscation effort. The reality is that the military and NG would be the only place they could be used. If you keep yours you couldn't use it, no shooting ranges could allow them, you couldn't buy ammunition for them. If you were caught using one charges would include possession and use. Keeping yours would just become you dangerous hidden illegal secret...

In time as the madness of the gun proliferation period of American life fades into the past and common sense firearms reforms end the daily toll of mass shootings those who have worked so hard to keep gun proliferation profitable will be unable to wipe the blood from their hands.

Why not ban criminals, dopeheads and crazy people instead?

Getting rid of crazies and druggies and criminals is what will make a safe country, because if you ban all the guns then people who use them to hurt others will still be here.

That's as dumb as saying "there are too many car jackings so we're going to ban cars".
