Attorneys call for criminal investigation after video shows man beaten by Camden County Detention Center deputies

Attorneys are calling on the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate the beating of a 41-year-old man inside the Camden County jail.

On Monday, attorneys representing Jarrett Hobbs released a letter they sent to the Justice Department, asking for the DOJ Civil Rights Division to investigate after video recorded Hobbs being beaten by deputies at the Camden County Detention Center.

In the letter, Harry Daniels, one of Hobbs’ attorneys, writes that his client’s 14th Amendment right was violated. He goes on to request that the DOJ bring charges and investigate whether the beating was racially motivated as a hate crime.

What makes this a federal issue at all?

All I see is an inmate getting the crap beat out of him- no indication at all as to what the reason was or if it was justified. Even if it wasn't justified, how is it a federal matter? Local hoosegows aren't the federal government's business, and the local sheriff who runs the facility can give the correctional officers a verbal reprimand if they violated the rules in any way, and even put a letter in their personnel files if the situation calls for such drastic action.
