i just don't see India and China growing much more aligned than they already are, with the notable exception of economic ties.

India has much more to gain (and prominent and influential Indians are saying this) by an alliance with Japan and America. What will seal this alliance will be democratic elections (pushed for and spearheaded quietly by the US) in Pakistan, which will lead to a decrease in tensions and eventual peace between India and Pakistan.

The Himilayas are not the boundary they once were, just like the Atlantic isn't for us. Not so sure on that Nato...

China is an expansionist power in Asia, America is not. What would stop China from taking India's land or threatening Indian influence?

India doesn't trust us that much, in spite of the 'intellectuals.' With the agreement by the US to sell more advanced weapons to Pakistan, with EU acting in checkmate to US, India may feel very much like USSR making pact with Hitler. Doesn't mean it's permanent, but is very possible expedient for the present.
