AOC Flunks Economics 101

Marc Thiessen: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is an economic illiterate -- And that's bad news for America

"The left complains that conservatives are "obsessing" over Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Well, there is a reason for that: Ocasio-Cortez is driving the agenda of today's Democratic Party -- and her economic illiteracy is dangerous.

Case in point: Last week, Ocasio-Cortez celebrated the tanking of a deal negotiated by her fellow Democrats in which Amazonpromised to build a new headquarters in Long Island City, New York, right next to her congressional district. Amazon's departure cost the city between 25,000 and 40,000 new jobs. Forget the tech workers whom Amazon would have employed. Gone are all the unionized construction jobs to build the headquarters, as well as thousands of jobs created by all the small businesses -- restaurants, bodegas, dry cleaners and food carts -- that were preparing to open or expand to serve Amazon employees. They are devastated by Amazon's withdrawal.

Ocasio-Cortez was not disturbed at all. "We were subsidizing those jobs," she said. "Frankly, if we were willing to give away $3 billion for this deal, we could invest those $3 billion in our district, ourselves, if we wanted to. We could hire out more teachers. We can fix our subways. We can put a lot of people to work for that amount of money if we wanted to."

No, you can't. Ocasio-Cortez does not seem to realize that New York does not have $3 billion in cash sitting around waiting to be spent on her socialist dreams. The subsidies to Amazon were tax incentives, not cash payouts. It is Amazon's money, which New York agreed to make tax-exempt, so the company would invest it in building its new headquarters, hiring new workers and generating tens of billions in new tax revenue.

She should have to post her collage grades.

She didn’t support special tax incentives. That’s a good thing.

You're too stupid to see her stupidity.

You socialists are funny.

You economic illiterates used to be funny, but now you're just dreary and boring.
I understand economics a whole lot better than you kid.

You understand neither jack nor shit about economics.

Occasional Cortex's objection wasn't to the tax incentives per se, but that she's stupid enough to have believed that the $3 billion in tax breaks exists as cash-on-hand...That makes you every bit as economically illiterate as she is.

You can't see past your ignorance built on prejudices and pathological hate.

How much of that $3 million will go to the construction companies, where do their employees live and how much of their wage will go to her district? How much will go to lumber, steel and concrete to build the facility, how man carpenters, electricians, plumbers, etc. live in her district? Live in NYC?

I would like her to take a stab at explaining capital gains to someone though. To this point in my book Barry holds the title for most uninformed on the topic, and I’m just curious which of the two a-holes is the dumbest.

Although they were taking tax incentives Amazon would have brought billions to the NY area. I suspect when the kids that voted this kid into office will see it differently in 6 years and vote her out. I read that most were not low paying jobs but rather in the realm of 6 figures, but then again N.Y. city is expensive. The democratic party needs to shut her mouth and quick or there will be no viable candidate for 2020 and the hopes and dreams are gone.

I don't see anyone in Congress that could actually pass economics 101 and have the ability to apply it in real terms to the govt.

I am reminded, though, of a time back in the 70s when Jane Fonda and her commie husband Tom Hayden were touring the country during their "Campaign for Economic Democracy".

As a member of Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) at the time, I was part of a group which protested when their tour brought them to Yale University.

At one point during the Q&A, one of our group rose and asked the two fuckwits if they knew the difference between inflation and rising prices, seeing as they were pretending to be experts in economics.

The question stumped them.

Awesome.

Nice foul mouth
Learned that at Yale or just protesting?
And remind us, where are they and where are you?
Reduced to whining on an old white fart board?

Economics 101 Question:

How do you pay for attempting to achieve ZERO Carbon Emmissions ... by upgrading/replacing EVERY building in the US, building a high-speed rail system that eliminates the need for air travel, end use of all fossil fuels and nuclear energy, end use of the current engine used in cars / trains / planes, & eliminates cow farts...using non-existent technology...?

AOC, the Democrats, snowflakes, and 2020 DNC candidates don't know either, but they all defend and support the Plan!

You think special tax incentives is good capitalism? You fail economics.

So you think government should have strong influence on private business? Sounds socialist...

Doesn't she have a degree in economics??

If so some fool of a professor sure did the State of NY a disservice. She has no knowledge of economics at all.

What a dingbat.
What "cracks me up" is that AOC has begun a conversation, actually a number of conversations. And instead of engaging in those conversations...Republicans can only engage in ad hominem attacks.

We're talking about a first term Congress person who has no real power other than the power of her ideas...and those ideas TERRIFY Republicans

Are we sure it wasn’t to be cash payments? Foxconn getting cash payments...

The agreement comes with a number of incentives: Specifically, Amazon will receive $897 million from the city’s Relocation and Employment Assistance Program (REAP) and $386 million from the Industrial & Commercial Abatement Program (ICAP). It will receive an additional $505 million in a capital grant and $1.2 billion in “Excelsior” credits if its job creation goals are met. That brings the total amount of public funds granted to $2.988 billion—in other words, the city and state will pay Amazon $48,000 per job.
