Anyone know about Netbooks?

Nowadays, High Schoolers don't take their books to school. But they do
take their IPads, notebooks and netbooks. They do their homework and
turn it in online (remember "My dog at my homework!"? Now it's "A nasty trojan virus ate my hard-drive!"). Honestly I don't know the difference between a notebook and a netbook but my daughter's BFF just got a new netbook from Gateway for about $250 and now of course, she's DYING for one.
It only weights like 3 pounds. It's cool. All the cool kids have one.
Her laptop is "like totally ancient".

Anyone have feedback on what is a good netbook to get, which ones to
stay away from etc... ?

Not a clue.

I, once a former pioneer of the world of computers and the internet, am now practically a digitial luddite.

I have an antiquated desktop computer that is running on steam power (I think! I fortunately never have to look inside the box)

A good start would be to ask your daughter how much money she's got to invest in joining the cool kid crowd and stepping away from her ancient past.

She's been working since she was 10 (she's 15 now). She probably has about a couple thousand in savings and a few hundred in checking. But she's fairly frugal and doesn't want to go blow more money on this than necessary. That's why she asked dad to do some research for her! :eusa_angel:

So any tips?

Get her a tablet, netbooks are bulky and over wieght in comparison. You can get a basic one for about the cost of a netbook, or go whole hog and spring for an iPad if you think she is responsible.

Here's her basic needs / wants:

MS Office '10 for Students
Built in web-cam & Skype
Ability to watch movies etc... streaming
Gaming is not her thing.
USB's or wireless to connect to printer and also the projecter at school during presentations.

Can tablets do these things? I really don't know much about them.

I have a netbook. The basic difference between it and a notebook (besides being smaller) is that it doesn't have a cd/dvd drive. Still has usb ports though.

Given a choice, instead of a netbook, I'd get an ipad or some other tablet, you can get external keypads for them if you like. I got my netbook using my points from the Muckleshoot casino.

Acer has a tablet that tuns windows, which will let it run Office if that is a deal breaker. Any tablet will run Google Docs which is compatible with Office. Most tablets have cams both front and back, can stream movies, and use wireless, most also have mini USB connections. The cool factor is a lot higher with a tablet.
