A state of emergency has been declared in New South Wales as Australian firefighters battle bushfires that have already destroyed more than 200 homes.

The announcement comes as conditions look set to deteriorate with soaring temperatures and strong winds expected to fan the flames in the coming days.

The Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, has been the worst-hit region with some fires still raging out of control.

State officials say they are the most dangerous conditions in 40 years.

New South Wales Premier Barry O'Farrell said the declaration would give emergency services additional powers over the next 30 days which could include cutting gas and power supplies if needed.

2012 Has Had Most Extreme Weather On Record for U.S.

(excerpts)
The first eight months of 2012 had the most extreme weather in U.S. since such record-keeping began in 1910, according to the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC). The Climate Extremes Index, or CEI, is used to track the highest and lowest 10 percent of extremes in temperature, precipitation, drought, and tropical storms and hurricanes across the lower 48 states. That the year-to-date was the most extreme on record should not come as much of a surprise, since the year to date was the hottest on record, and a massive drought, accompanied by searing heat waves, gripped much of the country from March through the end of the summer.

According to the NCDC, the extremes index was more than one and a half times the average value during the summer, which was the result of record heat and dryness. Studies show that global climate change is already increasing the odds of some extreme weather and climate events, particularly heat waves and precipitation extremes, including droughts and floods. The CEI's value for the January-to-August period was a record 47 percent, meaning that 47 percent of the contiguous U.S. experienced top 10 percent extreme weather conditions. The average value during this period is just 20 percent. "Extremes in warm daytime temperatures and warm nighttime temperatures contributed to the record high USCEI value," the NCDC stated in a report released on Monday. The second most extreme CEI value on record occurred just last year.

Does 2013 come before of after 2012? After, right? So if your insane theory is correct how can the weather be "less extreme"

Tinkerbelle should stop calling GoldiRocks a "fruitcake" to avoid a bitch fight.

And the Tink just stated that "year to year" == weather

And then proceeded to offer proof of climate change by contrasting two adjacent years..
Could this get any easier or entertaining??

WOW!!! You can actually count. Amazing, and very surprising in someone as retarded as you are.

So if your insane theory is correct how can the weather be "less extreme"
"Insane theories" are your domain, CrazyFruitcake, and you're good at concocting them but unfortunately awful at backing them up with any evidence. I just listen to what the vast majority of climate scientists are saying about what their data and research are revealing about the state of the Earth's climate patterns and temperatures. After a record breaking number of extreme weather events last year in the USA, it is not at all surprising that this year would see a reduced number of them.

Natural factors, like the position and behavior of the jet stream, cause the weather patterns in some area, like the USA, to vary from year to year. In the USA, 2012 was a year in which there were a record breaking number of extreme weather events while 2013 has, so far, had fewer extreme weather events. Because of AGW, the trend globally is towards more and more extreme weather events but that doesn't mean that every part of the planet will experience a greater number of such events every year than the previous year. Natural factors still influence the year to year variations in weather. It's really too bad that you and fecalhead and walleyed are all way too retarded to comprehend this.

Look at the crazies, denying that the increased Antarctic ice was correctly predicted way, way ahead of time. When reality smacks them in the face, they just deny reality harder.

They are jealous, obviously. AGW science has decades of successful predictions behind it. That's why it has such cred worldwide. In stark contrast, none of the denialists kooks even has the guts to make a prediction. I can't, however, say they have a perfect record of failure, being that 0/0 is an undefined number.

According to your insane theory we had record number of "extreme" weather events (whatever the fuck that's supposed to mean) in 2012, we added more CO2 and then the extreme weather stopped

Yeah makes perfect sense and so logically consistent too

More clueless drivel from the retard brigade, this time on the cartoon level that they are most comfortable with.

It is not surprising that you are too stupid to grasp what I'm saying, fecalhead, but, as would be obvious to anyone with an IQ above room temperature, I offered the info on the record breaking number of extreme weather events in the US in 2012 as evidence (not "proof", nitwit, there is no such thing in science as "proof") that this year's relatively low number of extreme weather events is not evidence against AGW but rather just the normal variation of weather from year to year. Of course, that natural variation in weather patterns is happening within the general trend of increasing wild and weird weather events globally, as a number of scientific studies have shown.

Yeah that was mean and too easy Tink....
So lemme tell ya how silly all this is.. You and the other AGW culters on this board believe in the AGW bible that tells you that that the End Times are coming (in the future). So just like Michelle Bachmann seeing signs of the 2nd Coming, you jerks are constantly looking for evidence of that event that you desparately want to be a part of..

Here's the science part.. You take a study like the one you posted and realize that neither Cyclonic activity or Tornadoes for instance were Exceptional for 2012 except in WHERE they hit. So any time you group MULTIPLE predictors into an "index" like that one -- you immediately bias the statistic. True fact. There will always HIGHER SCARY numbers for a grouped predictor than the single indicators themselves.

It's all propaganda designed to FEED your angst.. Because you believe the Earth's climate is so fragile that a 2 or 3 deg change will set off "the trigger" that destroys the atmos..

The US is only about 2% of the Earth's surface, moron. Just because the US has seen somewhat fewer extreme weather events so far this year than last year does not mean that "the extreme weather stopped". The rest of the world is still experiencing them. Here's a partial list. The following article contains many links to full articles (where it says "more") so follow the link in the title to the source if you want to read more.

Extreme Weather Profile: 2013

At the beginning of 2013, a severe deep freeze, the worst in more than 40 years, killed more than 100 people in northern India more . . .

In Brazil, the worst drought in 50 years crippled the country's hydropower production and killed up to 30 percent of some crops more. . .

In early January, an especially powerful winter storm blasted the Middle East, freezing out some 50,000 Syrian refugees, and causing havoc in Jordan, Egypt and the West Bank more . . .

In Australia, a blistering heat wave sent temperatures about 123* F, melting roads, triggering wildfires and vaporizing gasoline more . . .

In mid-January, Chicago broke a 72-year record when the city went 320 days without snow more . . .

In southern California, temperatures plunged into the 20s, setting new records and threatening crops more . . .

In mid-January, intense flooding paralyzed Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, forcing the evacuation of tens of thousands of people more . . .

At the same time, an unusual storm dropped a foot of snow in southern Virginia and stranded motorists overnight in their cars in Alabama more . . .

In late January, extensive flooding in Mozambique killed at leat 46 people and left some 150,000 others homeless more . . .

At the same time, massive flooding forced the evacuations of thousands of people in the Australian states of Queensland and New South Wales more . . .

In early February, a massive blizzard struck the northeastern US, leaving 4 people dead and nearly 700,000 without power and forcing governors in five states to declare states of emergency. The storm dumped up to three feet of snow in parts of Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts more . . .

In March, New Zealand's worst water shortage in 30 years triggered bans on water use and left farmers considering the slaughter of cattle to reduce water demand more . . .

In Argentina, the area around Buenos Aires was hit with what officials called a "tsunami" of rain, which forced the evacuations of thousands of people, left some homes under nearly five feet of water and left at least 54 people dead more . . .

In mid-April, a massive storm system swept across the midwestern U.S. bringing record snow to North Dakota, dropping temperatures in Denver from 71* to 14* in one day and triggering the cancellation of 290 flights in Chicago more . . .

In May, 2013, the biggest tornado on record in the US, two miles wide with wind speeds up to 200 miles per hour, devastated the town of Moore, Oklahoma. While it raised questions about whether it was a consequence of a warming atmosphere, scientists said there is no way at this point to know whether there is a correlation between warming and tornado formation. "So far, there’s simply not enough information to say anything definitive about the future of tornadoes under climate change. But every thunderstorm, and every tornado, now takes place in a warmer, wetter atmosphere due to the increasing concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere," according to scientists at ClimateCentral.org. One thing is clear, however. The weather is getting bigger. That same month, three people died and 130 others had to be rescued when more than 12 inches of rain inundated San Antonio, Texas in one day more . . .

In June, Germany, Austria, Poland, Switzerland and the Czech Republic were inundated with torrential rains which drove thousands of people from their homes and left at least six people dead more . . .

In Pakistan, a scorching heat wave sent temperatures higher than at any time in the last six decades, with temperatures reaching as high as 124 F. more . . .

That same month, Colorado struggled with the most destructive wildfire in the state's history, scorching more than 1,500 acres and destroying more than 400 homes more . . .

In mid-June, weather extremes battered the globe. In western Canada, some 100,000 people were forced to evacuate their homes because of extremely heavy flooding more . . .

At the same time, tens of thousands of people were trapped in northern India by heavy monsoons and landslides which isolated about 100 towns and villages more . . .

In Alaska, after one of the coldest springs on record, temperatures soared into the low 90s setting new high temperature marks more . . .

In late June an epic wildfire in Colorado scorched more than 114 miles more . . .

At the beginning of July, the western US was scorched by a record-breaking heat wave that sent temperatures as high as 117 F. in Las Vegas and up to 128 F. in Death Valley, California more . . .

The extreme heat triggered an intense wildfire in Arizona that killed 19 firefighters more . . .

In early July, more than 300,000 people were without power in Toronto when the city was inundated by about three-and-a-half inches of rain, an average month's worth of precipitation, fell in one day more

I assume the point of this thread is to point out how AGW scientists were proven correct on yet another successful prediction.

That is why AGW scientists have such credibility. They make predictions, the predictions come true, over and over.

The only paper I have seen you guys post regarding the increase in antarctic ice was one where the author himself was surprised at the continued growth in the face of increasing CO2

It wasn't, but if you believe it was, feel free to post 6 or 7 papers prior to 2000 where the prediction of growing antarctic ice was made. Of course for every one you can post we can post 4 or 5 predicting increasing melting.

What's the point Princess? ALL THIS caused by CO2? Including the freezing and the snow events? You think this is proof, evidence, biblical prophecy, or what?

You zealots all do thing.. You DENY that you're SEEING contemporary evidence is in the news and weather --- but then you continue to interpret weather as a sign from the gods.

Remember -- the PRIMARY operating rules of science requires MUCH LESS PROOF to dispel a theory than it does to prove one..

But that won't sink in with this crowd...

If the IPCC has made the prediction that the antarctic ice sheet should grow then show us their report and highlight the relevant text.
There is nothing in AR4 or Ar5, in fact they predicted the opposite...and later added that there are "significant challenges" in modelling the antarctic

Antarctic, Greenland ice melt accelerating: IPCC leak

The authors of the latest report said there has been “substantial progress in ice-sheet modeling” since 2007. Even so, there remain “significant challenges” in modeling Antarctic glaciers and ice sheets that terminate at the sea, and the forecast for their contribution to sea levels by 2100 was the same across all different emissions scenarios examined, unlike with Greenland.
The UN said in the earlier report that its understanding of how the southern continent loses ice from glaciers flowing into the sea wasn't good enough to include in its prediction.
On September 13 2013 in hindsight after the antarctic ice shelf grew, the IPCC made this new "prediction":
- The extent of Antarctica's sea ice “very likely” increased 1.2 per cent to 1.8 per cent a decade over the same period.
But are unable to explain it and declined any comment.
Same story in "Der Spiegel.de":

The article states that it is to date unknown why the antarctic ice shelf grew to a record extent.
There are 2 current theories:
1.) It was caused by colder ocean surface currents
2.) That the melt water is flowing through ice channels which then cool and re-freezes it at the fringes.
So not only was there no such prediction, there isn`t even a explanation what could have caused it...just more "theories" and of course only "theories" that could corroborate a "warming trend"...which also failed to materialize.

Well, sort of:lol::lol: Pretty startling to see it still growing...maximum extent is reached in September normally...

....because of AGW.

It's like three card Monte except all three cards say AGW

Hotter? AGW

Colder? AGW

Less Ice? AGW

More Ice? AGW

It's fool-proof!

Do you understand the difference between Climate and weather?
Almost everybody but the other denier cult retards understands the difference between climate and weather better than you do, CrazyFruitcake. As you demonstrate once again with your moronic post here.
Long term patterns = climate
Year to year variations = weather

"New Study: ’2013 ranks as one of the least extreme U.S. weather years ever’– Many bad weather events at ‘historically low levels’

'Whether you’re talking about tornadoes, wildfires, extreme heat or hurricanes, the good news is that weather-related disasters in the US are all way down this year compared to recent years and, in some cases, down to historically low levels.'
Tornadoes: 'lowest total in several decades'
Number of wildfires: 'On pace to be the lowest it has been in the past ten years'
Extreme Heat: The number of 100 degree days may 'turn out to be the lowest in about 100 years of records'
Hurricanes: 'We are currently in the longest period (8 years) since the Civil War Era without a major hurricane strike in the US (i.e., category 3, 4 or 5)' ( last major hurricane to strike the US was Hurricane Wilma in 2005)"

2012 Has Had Most Extreme Weather On Record for U.S.
Climate Central
September 11th, 2012
By Andrew Freedman

What climate change? Fewer people than EVER believe the world is really warming up

CLIMATE change scepticism is rapidly increasing in the UK with a FIFTH of people now unconvinced the world's temperature is changing.

By: Owen Bennett
Published: Thu, September 19, 2013

A report from the UK Energy Research Centre also shows the number of those who resolutely do not believe in climate change has more than quadrupled since 2005.

The Government funded report shows 19 per cent of people are climate change disbelievers - up from just four per cent in 2005 - while nine per cent did not know.

The report comes as climate change scientists working on a landmark UN report on climate change are struggling to explain why global warming appears to have slowed down in the past 15 years even though greenhouse gas emissions keep rising.

Dr. Roy Spencer, a former NASA scientist and author of Climate Confusion, argues in his influential blog the UN report shows scientists are being forced to "recognise reality".

He said: "We are now at the point in the age of global warming hysteria where the IPCC global warming theory has crashed into the hard reality of observations."

Green Party leader Natalie Bennett blamed the Government for the increase in climate change doubters.

She said: "When the government is so clearly failing to act on climate change, or take seriously its obligations under the Climate Change Act, it's not surprising that the level of doubt about climate change has risen.

"Of course, however, the 72 per cent of the public who acknowledge the climate is changing are backed overwhelmingly by the scientific evidence.

"The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration concluded that half of last year's extreme weather events around the world were in part caused by climate change.

"With massive floods in Colorado and Mexico in the grip of flood disaster, we're reminded that the forces of nature have huge force that we must not continue to magnify."
