Pressed further, he testified that, since going to work for the DEA, he had imported 1,500 pounds of cocaine into the U.S. Supposed informant Seal will fly repeatedly to Colombia, Guatemala, and Panama, where he meets with Jorge Ochoa, Fabio Ochoa, Pablo Escobar, and Carlos Lehder - leaders of the cartel that at the time controlled an estimated 80 percent of the cocaine entering the United States."

He resigned from the paper in November 1997.

Webb was found dead in his Carmichael home on December 10, 2004, with two gunshot wounds to the head. His death was ruled a suicide by the Sacramento County coroner's office. According to a description of Webb's injuries in the Los Angeles Times, he shot himself with a .38 revolver, which he placed near his right ear. The first shot went through his face, and exited at his left cheek. The coroner's staff concluded that the second shot hit an artery.[71]

Except when the study started in 1932, there was no treatment for syphilis. In fact, it was not used to treat syphilis until WWII in 1943, and it didn't become the standard treatment until 1947.

Even then, it was not known if it was effective for treating late-stage cases.

You also had to consider the social stigma of syphilis at the time. People at the time saw STD's as a moral failing (and to a degree, still do today.)
