What's an alert? There's a way to get an alert if someone replies to your post?

Click on your name/avatar, you will see a list.

on the list, click 'alert preferences'

you will see a list like this:
Receive an alert when someone...

• Replies to a watched thread
  
  Someone replies to a thread you are watching
  
  
• Attaches a file to a watched thread
  Someone replies and attaches a file to a thread you are watching
  
  
• Quotes your message
  Someone directly quotes one of your messages in a thread
  
  
• Mentions you in a message
  Someone mentions you in a message
  
  
• Thanked your message
  Someone thanked one of your messages in a thread

click the box on what you want to be alerted on.

But how is one alerted? Do I get an e-mail, a message somewhere on the screen? What? As long as we're at it, is there any way NOT to get an e-mail everytime someone replies to a thread I've looked at?

I too want to stop the freaking emails!!! Nothing so far seems to stop them.

Then unclick the buttons in alert preferences.

  When someone like your albums or an album that you are tagged-in or commented on.
  
  
• Comments on an album
  When someone comments on your albums, an album that you are tagged-in, or commented on.
  • and receive email notifications
• Add a photo to an album
  When someone adds a new photo to your albums, an album that you are tagged-in, or commented on.
  • and receive email notifications
• Add a video to an album
  When someone adds a new video to your albums, an album that you are tagged-in, or commented on.
  • and receive email notifications
• Tag you in a album
  When someone tagged you to an album.

I have unclicked every single one of them since day 1, and I still get the e-mails.
