Here's a simple example of what that means: If you say to any American, "Fill in the blank: America is a nation of ___________.", 99 times out of 100 they will answer "immigrants", right. Fifty years ago, that isn't the answer you would have gotten. Fifty years ago, you would have gotten the answer "America is a nation of settlers" or "America is a nation of pioneers". How did that happen? How, in half a century, did we all change the answer to the very fundamental question of who we are?

Art changed our answer. With the possible exception of music, the most powerful art form is cinema (along with its poor cousin, television). The cinematic arts changed the way we see ourselves. Over the past fifty years, wagon trains went from the admirable enterprises of Westward, Ho! to the objects of ridicule in Blazing Saddles, westerns went from portraying honorable chivalrous tough-as-nails white men taming a continent in Shane to the despicable, cruel, and conniving white men (except the one good white man, who becomes an Indian) of Dances with Wolves. You are right about the salubrious effect of Christianity on the culture the Greeks bequeathed us. And the demonization of Christianity is neither accidental nor inconsequential. It needs a serious update in order to save itself, and, by extension, us.

I also agree with you that culture trumps race. I always use the example: if a white American guy and a black American guy are plopped down into the middle of a crowded bar, it doesn't matter whether it's in rural Kenya or rural Slovakia, they will likely end up hanging together, because they laugh at the same jokes, get each other's oblique references, etc. They share the same culture, which will trump the racial distinction.

Personally I've never really thought of my German/Norwegian heritage as "important" to the nation as a whole, simply to myself and my family. Personal pride... Maybe at best a bit of state/community connection with German settlers who moved up here [Alaska] in the 50's from Wisconsin, Minnesota, etc. (My family comes from North Dakota though so it's minimal at best for me personally.)

I guess I have "respect" or "acknowledgement" for all nationalities, and viewpoints, that formed the historical tapestry of America, though I personally don't think any of them as the be all and end all of what is "America" but rather it is the melding and influence of all of them that has created the unique and oft quirky culture of America. ~shrug~

That is a very benign, northern European way of looking at it. Unfortunately, there are many tribes in the world who hold other views.
