As my Mom tells it, I was just a wee toddler, my grandparents' collie (Lassie dog) raised the alarm after I fell into their pond. Everyone was inside socializing and whatnot, I meandered outside, fell in the pond, and the dog went absolutely nuts. Barked, tried climbing up and over the high wire fence enclosing it, and basicly caused so much alarm inside the house they came out to see what was going on.
Dogs truly are our best friends. Thinking of my human friends later in life, their idea when I'm choking in the pool was more like, "Are you choking?"
